The Los Angeles Dodgers, a prominent American professional baseball team, are based in Los Angeles. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) West division. Originating in 1883 in Brooklyn, which later became part of New York City in 1898, the team joined the NL in 1890 under the name Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Throughout their history, they adopted various names, eventually settling on the Dodgers in 1932. During the 1940s to the mid-1950s, the Dodgers cultivated a fierce crosstown rivalry with the New York Yankees, meeting in the World Series seven times. Initially, the Dodgers lost the first five matchups before securing their first championship in 1955 against the Yankees. Notably, the Dodgers made history in 1947 by breaking the sport's color barrier with the introduction of Jackie Robinson, the first African American player in the Major Leagues since 1884. Additionally, they achieved another significant milestone in 1956 when Don Newcombe became the inaugural player to win both the Cy Young Award and the NL MVP in a single season.
