TAMPA, Fla. -- The NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning beat one of the Western Conference's top teams in very convincing fashion.
Steven Stamkos had two goals and two assists as the Lightning won their sixth consecutive game, romping over the Colorado Avalanche 7-1 on Saturday night.
"It was fun to be a part of," Stamkos said. "I just thought that we deserved everything that we got today, including some bounces and some breaks. But when you're on top of the puck like we were tonight, it's going to be tough for the other team.
Raw Charge: Stamkos posts four points as the Lightning outclass the Avalanche 7-1
The Tampa Bay Lightning put a whoopin' on the Colorado Avalanche tonight and deserved every bit of the 7-1 victory. The story entering the night was that both teams had won eight of their last ten games. But after tonight, the Avs clearly still have work to do to become real contenders.
The game featured tons of top end talent including the top three scorers in the league in Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nikita Kucherov. Brayden Point made it four of the top six. But the difference tonight was depth.
Mile High Hockey: Top Dog Tampa Bay crushes Colorado in road-trip finale
All day, the Colorado Avalanche's meeting with the Tampa Bay Lightning was being promoted as a litmus test -- a measuring stick game -- for the Avs. Colorado entered the night with the top goal-differential in the Western Conference; Tampa Bay had the top goal-differential in the East (and the league).
While one could say Colorado failed its litmus test. One could also just forget the game ever happened.
It was pretty bad.
The Lightning outclassed the Avalanche from start to finish, as the home team beat Colorado 7-1, dominating all facets of the game.
Fansided: Colorado Avalanche Hoping to Top the Top Team, Tampa Bay Lightning
The Colorado Avalanche are the number-four team in the NHL with their 39 points, which is heady stuff indeed. They are six points behind the league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning, though.
to be honest, that's still pretty heady business.
Tonight, the two teams face off for the second and final time this season. They met for the first time this season on October 24, a low-scoring affair that saw Tampa shut Colorado out while only scoring a goal themselves. Last season, the Bolts took both games. However, all-time the Avs have an edge -- 17-12-2-3 (ties).
The Avalanche are coming off a thrilling 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers.

The two highest-scoring teams in the league managed one goal in their last meeting and round two could be much different when the Colorado Avalanche visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. The Lightning (3.83 goals per game) earned a 1-0 victory in an up-and-down battle at Colorado (3.69) on Oct. 24 for their fourth straight win in the series and take a five-game winning streak overall into the showdown... http://bit.ly/2B2vYpX

Denver Post: Avalanche at Lightning: Five things to know as Colorado battles the NHL's best team on Saturday
Following the Avalanche's 5-2 victory over Florida on Thursday, Colorado's weeklong road trip finishes on Saturday night in Tampa Bay. Here's five story lines to watch heading into the showdown against the Lightning at Amalie Arena.
Taking on hockey's best. Tampa Bay (22-7-1) is currently the league's best team, sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference with an NHL-most 45 points. They've won five consecutive games and have won eight of their last nine games overall after Thursday's defeat of the Red Wings.
