Pension Plan Puppets: Leafs Stink It Up Against Colorado, Lose 6-3
Due to a comical series of mishaps (mostly me being foolish), we were left without a formal recapper for the first period of tonight's contest, so you are left with Things Fulemin Remembered for the opening frame. Here they are:The Avalanche are, by numbers and reputation, a one-line team, and so they appeared. That said, the Leafs started in sleepy fashion and did not have an especially inspiring opening five minutes. Freddie was tested early in his ability to keep steady during scrambles in and around his crease. It took a powerplay for Toronto to really get rolling.
Mile High Hockey: Colorado Avalanche take advantage of struggling Maple Leafs in 6-3 road win
On Monday night in Toronto, the Colorado Avalanche jumped on a Maple Leafs team struggling with confidence and rode a second period comeback to an eventual 6-3 victory. Carl Soderberg earned his first career hat trick with a goal in the second, third, and an empty-netter in the final minutes to seal the deal.
The 158th hat trick in franchise history was also the second of the season; Gabriel Landeskog scored three against New Jersey back in October. Soderberg is the oldest player to score his first hat trick for the franchise since Andrew Burnette scored three on the Edmonton Oilers back on December 19th, 2006.
MLHS: Mike Babcock Post Game, Avalanche 6 vs. Leafs 3: "Since Christmas, we haven't been engaged enough"
On the team's performance:
I thought they worked harder than we did. Any way you look at it, I think we are .500 in our last ten. Since Christmas, we haven't been engaged enough. We haven't competed at a high enough level.
If you just did a, "Who won all the races and who won all the battles?" They did. The game was fair in the end. I thought we were in a good spot, obviously. We had good chances in the first on the power play. We had the breakaway. We had the seam pass.

Despite losing nine of their past 10 games, the Avalanche still hold one of the two Wild Card playoff spots in the Western Conference. That won't last long if the team can't string together a few wins as Vancouver, Anaheim and Minnesota all sit a single point behind the Avs in the standings.

Toronto Maple Leafs (77% consensus). The Colorado Avalanche's pronounced woes on the road grow worse with each passing game while the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't been too keen about their recent performances at home, either. Fansided: Colorado Avalanche: Please Beat the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Colorado Avalanche have just one win in 2019, and that's painful. They're 2-8-2 in their last 12 games, and that's painful. They're getting ready to play the 28-14-2 Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Painful.
The Avalanche will win again one day, won't they? Sometimes, watching games recently, it didn't feel like they would. Especially as the outplayed their last three opponents and still came up short -- it really started feeling like no more wins were forthcoming.
However, we can't allow ourselves to get down. As sports fans, we must be Schrodinger's cat, with both optimism and pessimism coexisting inside of us.
