Missouri lost three games to teams in the top 12. Vanderbilt lost three of four at teams in the top 15. Both of these teams are better than their records indicate. 16 points seems like a big number on this one. I'll be taking Vandy to cover on the road.

Both of these teams are better than their respective records might indicate and Missouri surprised a lot of people with a 38-17 upset win over Florida last weekend . Missouri is 5-4 on the season, but don't let that fool you, three of Missouris four losses this season came against teams ranked inside the top-12 in the nation and two of their four losses came by two points or less. Meanwhile, three of the Commodores four defeats have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top-15 and three of those losses came by 10 points or less. With that being said, 17 points seems like a fairly lofty number, especially considering KeShawn Vaughn is back for the Commodores. I dont think Missouri overlooks Vanderbilt in this spot but I just think this is too many points for a Commodores team that has had an extra week to prepare for this game.

  • Anchor Of Gold: Missouri 33, Vanderbilt 28: Missed opportunities doom the Commodores again

    NCAAF

Really, what else needs to be said about Saturday's game?

Vanderbilt and Missouri were two evenly-matched teams. Yards per play and success rate paint a picture of one team (Missouri) that was able to dink and dunk its way down the field, but didn't have a ton of big plays; the Tigers had just four plays of 20 yards or more. Vanderbilt had nine such plays, but the Commodores' offense was less successful if it wasn't ripping off big chunks of yardage. That tie should have been broken by Missouri committing two turnovers to Vanderbilt's zero, and both turnovers happened to give Vanderbilt excellent field position: Vanderbilt had a significant advantage in starting field position thanks to two drives that started at the Missouri 30 and the Missouri 35, both off Drew Lock interceptions.

The ending to the Missouri (6-4, 2-4 SEC) and Vanderbilt (4-6, 1-5 SEC) matchup Saturday mirrored the ending to the Tigers' loss to Kentucky:

A late drive. Wide open receivers leading to multiple first downs. One last shot at the end zone for their opponent.

In the words of the great Yogi Berra, it was almost "like deja vu all over again."

Commodores senior quarterback Kyle Shurmur spiked the ball with five seconds left on the clock at Missouri's 25 with the Tigers holding a slim 33-28 lead. He had led his team all the way downfield from Vanderbilt's own 13, and it looked like another heartbreak was on the way for Missouri.

    NCAAF

Last week Barry Odom had to revive his team after a deflating loss to Kentucky. This week he's had to bring them down to earth after a huge win at Florida. Will the Tigers experience a letdown at home or play with the same spark they carried from start to finish in Gainesville? Surely this team won't get overconfident after one impressive win? "I think we're already moved on," linebacker Cale Garrett said this week. "I have, at least. I think that's the mindset for everyone. We're putting to bed what we did the week before and moving on to the next one.

Though Vanderbilt and Missouri have identical 1-4 SEC records, few people consider these teams to be identical. Vanderbilt's four SEC losses have come to the likes of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Kentucky, by an average of 17 points per game. Their lone SEC win came at Arkansas, widely considered the SEC's worst team.

Missouri's four SEC losses have come against Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky; while the loss to Alabama wasn't close, they kept things respectable against Georgia, lost to South Carolina on a late field goal, and lost to Kentucky on a last-second touchdown following a controversial pass interference call.

Admittedly, I doubted the Tigers would pull a win over the Gators a week ago, as I picked against them. It wasn't a plan of reverse-psychology or an attempt to fool luck into letting the Tigers get a win, but I'm still glad the game turned out the way it did.

This week, the Tigers prepare for a more homely foe in Vanderbilt, and if Missouri plays anything like it did a week ago, then this game should basically go the same way.

While Vanderbilt isn't as formidable a foe as Kentucky, Florida, or Georgia (Alabama is in a league solely its own), the Commodores have still shown they can present problems to opponents.
