Texas Longhorns vs Texas Tech Red Raiders Recap for September 24th, 2022, 3:30PM ET

Texas is playing Texas Tech at the Jones AT&T Stadium stadium on Saturday, 9/24/2022 @ 3:30pm EST. Texas -4.5 was the opening favorite and current line is Texas -6.5.

Texas is 6.5-point favorites with 60.0 points, while Texas Tech sits at +215 money lines. The Longhorns have dominated the Red Raiders of late, and will be looking for their fifth consecutive victory.

It was a heartbreaking loss to the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2, but the Texas Longhorns improved to 2-1 straight up and 3-0 ATS with a 41-20 win over UTSA Roadrunners. The Longhorns led by 11 points at the end of the third quarter after junior RB Bijan Robinson piled up 183 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries against UTSA's defense. Junior DB Jahdae Barron scored a 44-yard pick-six.

As a result of a collarbone injury sustained in Week 2, Quinn Ewers will not be available for the next few weeks. Hudson Card will dress for this game, but unlikely to start. He completed 15-of-23 for 161 yards and a touchdown last weekend.

Despite Ewers' absence, Texas will continue to rely on its ground game. Bijan Robinson has gained 311 yards and scored five touchdowns on 51 carries in the first three weeks of the 2022 CFB season. Aside from his 195 carries for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns, Robinson also had 26 receptions for 295 yards and four scores last year.

In their first game of the 2022 season, Texas Tech outlasted Murray State 63-10 as 38.5-point home favorites and No. 25 Houston 33-30 as 4-point home favorites. Having lost 27-14 to No. 16 NC State in Week 3, Texas Tech fell to 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS after the Wolfpack's defense tortured the Red Raiders. In the second quarter, Texas Tech committed four turnovers, including an 84-yard pick-six, which made the score 20-0.

Last weekend, sophomore quarterback Donovan Smith threw 21-of-36 passes for 214 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He also carried 11 times for minus-9 yards and a touchdown. While the Red Raiders averaged just 2.7 yards per rush against Houston, Smith threw for 350 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. RB Tahj Brooks leads their backfield in 2022 with 27 carries for 132 yards and four touchdowns.

This season, the Red Raiders have allowed 82.7 rushing yards (18th in the country) and 211.0 passing yards per game (63rd). Senior defensive lineman Tyree Wilson has logged 21 tackles, 5.5 TFL, and 2.5 sacks so far.

BETTING PREDICTION: In their season opener against Murray State, the Red Raiders lost QB Tyler Shough due to a shoulder injury. The Longhorns have held Alabama to 20 points in their last two starts, and I expect their defense to make the difference in Week 4. Donovan Smith has been up and down in his last two starts.  On the other side of the ball, the Red Raiders’ run D will be properly tested, as the Longhorns average 170.3 rushing yards per game and 5.2 per carry. As the O-line of Texas provides a lot of opportunities for Bijan Robinson to shine, he had 18 carries for 137 yards last season against Texas Tech. Last 12 meetings between the Longhorns and the Red Raiders have resulted in a 10-2 SU and a 9-3 ATS win.

It is clear that without Ewers, the Longhorns are putting more emphasis on the run game with Robinson, and he has shown no signs of slowing down with all eyes on him. Plus, Card has stepped up well under center and I just don't see the Tech run defense stopping Robinson.

Lock up your Texas -6.5 because this one will go to -7 or higher before kick. Texas is in a different class this year and was a missed FG at end of 1st half away from beating Alabama. Texas Tech should have lost that game to Houston and Houston just got beat by Kansas, so while KU is improved this year they still are a bottom shelf team and confirms that Houston isn't great this year either. Also UTSA lost to Houston in OT and Texas just handily beat the Road Runners. Sure you can say this pick is too linear but I'm just looking at the data that I've seen over the first 3 weeks. Tech looked below average last week against NC State and is still in rebuild mode with new HC Joey McGuire and Steve Sarkisian has been steadily recruiting blue chips and looks like Texas may finally be back. Also, it was reported today that Quin Ewers will travel and dress for the game, and while Ewers is listed as GTD I think he plays. Even w/o Ewers, Hudson Card is more than capable of running Texas offense. Texas stud linebacker Overshown is out 1st half due to targeting last week but I don't think it matters over 4 quarters....just don't play Texas 1st half this week. This line should be at least Texas -10 IMO. Hook Em'.

The Longhorns' regular quarterback is absent with injury but still, they remain favorites to win this contest. Even in his absence, the Longhorns have two wins in three matches. Their loss to Alabama was also by a small margin. I also think the Longhorns will be keen to capitalize on the slopiness of Donovan Smith who has been far from convincing this season.
