Missouri Tigers vs Auburn Tigers Recap for September 24th, 2022, 12:00PM ET

Missouri is playing Auburn at the Jordan-Hare Stadium stadium on Saturday, 9/24/2022 @ 12:00pm EST. Auburn -7 was the opening favorite and line hasn't moved.

Week three, Missouri won 34-17 over FCS Abilene Christian. The Tigers led 17-3 at halftime to win. Missouri won over ACU in week three and LouisianaTech in week one. They lost only to Kansas State in week two, where they were blown out by 40 points.

On offense, the Tigers have a lot of young players, especially with Brady Cook, who is the starter. In his sophomore year, Cook has thrown for 626 yards and four touchdowns, along with three interceptions. His best game of the season was against ACU when he threw for 297 yards on 22 passes out of 31 attempts. He threw for three touchdowns in the game and had zero interceptions. Dominic Lovett was his top target against ACU. He had 132 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns in the victory, his first two of the season. Lovett has hauled in 16 catches for 274 yards and is averaging 17 yards per catch.

Missouri's defense so far hasn't been particularly good. The Tigers allow 27 points per game, ranking 80th in the NCAA. As a team, they have only recorded five sacks in their first three games, as they have struggled to get into opposing backfields. This will be Missouri's second road game of the season after traveling to Manhattan, Kansas earlier in the season. The Tigers suffered a rain-soaked defeat. Eli Drinkwitz hopes his team learns from its experience at Jordan-Hare Stadium, which is always loud.

Starting QB hurt for Auburn?

Last week, Auburn lost 41-12 at home to Penn State as their offense dominated Auburn. They gained 245 yards on the ground against the SEC team. This was Auburn's first loss of the season after beating Mercer and San Jose State earlier in the year.

The game against Penn State was their first true test as quarterback T.J. Finley threw for 152 yards on 11-for-19 passing. In addition to throwing an interception, he ran for 21 yards. The Tigers trailed 14-6 at halftime, when Robby Ashford threw for 144 yards against Penn State. Finley, who completed 10 of 19 passes with a touchdown and an interception, suffered a right shoulder injury after the Penn State loss. According to the Montgomery Advertiser, he will not be able to play against Mizzou due to a shoulder injury that will keep him out for several weeks. Ashford will start and play the role of QB 1 against Mizzou.

Starting running back Tank Bigsby will be helping Ashford. Despite rushing for almost 1,100 yards last season, Bigsby hasn't found it easy. In the first week, Bigsby rushed for 147 yards against Mercer. In the second week, he had only 51 yards on the ground against San Jose State. Finally, he had only 39 yards against Penn State.

The defense for Auburn has been problematic as they have yet to record a takeaway in their first three games. They have zero interceptions and zero fumble recoveries. Along with no takeaways, they have struggled to get to the quarterback, too. They only have four sacks this season.

Auburn has the same type of personnel offensively that caused Missouri fits against Kansas State. Yes, TJ Finley is out but Robby Ashford can fill in well in that role. Auburn has the edge and should be able to cover the TD here.

I've got a Auburn 31 Missouri 21 type of score.

Though both of these teams are 2-1 with a blowout loss, their opponents have been very different. Missouri beat up on Louisiana Tech and ACU, but got dog walked by Kansas State. Auburn lost big as well, but to a very good Penn State team. Both teams run the ball well with an average over 200 yards per game, and are similar in passing yards per game. They also have comparable defenses with Missouri giving up 988 total yards of offense compared to Auburn’s 1077. Even though these numbers are similar, Auburn is the better team as they’ve played a better schedule. Kansas State beat Missouri and lost to Tulane, while Auburn's one loss is to 14th ranked Penn State.

Prediction: Auburn to win and cover here. Their running game is more dynamic and they should be able to control the game with Tank Bigsby.
