Masahiro Tanaka (3.27 ERA) gets the start for New York today. Tanaka defeated the Blue Jays in his last start, permitting three runs and seven hits over seven innings. Tanaka has allowed three earned runs or fewer in his last five starts, pitching to a 2.54 ERA over that span.
Robbie Ray (7.17 ERA) going for Toronto today. After allowing the Phillies five runs over 4 1/3 frames Friday, this will be a key step in establishing his postseason role. Barring an unforseen change, he'll likely be a multi-inning relief arm in the Wild Card Series but could start, if needed, later in October.
Yankees hold a huge advantage here with Tanaka going against Robbie Ray. Although the Blue Jays have not yet clinched a postseason spot, the chances of them not making it are highly unlikely, which makes this game more important for the Yankees in their fight for home field in the first round. Getting New York here at +120 on the RL has value as I think this one sets up for another shellacking.
