Detroit Free Press: Detroit Tigers avoid historically bad home record with win over White Sox, 6-3

The Detroit Tigers will not etch their name in baseball's record book this year.

With Sunday afternoon's 5-3 win over the White Sox at Comerica Park, the Tigers won their 22nd game of the regular season at home, eliminating the possibility they could become the first team in baseball history to lose 60 games at home.

Backed by consistent offense and a power show, left-hander Matthew Boyd won, navigating through plenty of traffic in five solid innings. The Tigers hit four home runs in the win.

Bless You Boys: Tigers 6, White Sox 3: four home runs back Boyd in Detroit victory

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the first inning, added a run in each of the next three frames and Detroit's bullpen threw four scoreless innings as the Tigers hung on to defeat the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park on Sunday afternoon by a score o 6- 3.

Matt Boyd surrendered a two run home run in the top of the first inning to Eloy Jimenez, then held Chicago to just one more run to improve his record to 9- 11 for the season.

After Jimenez homered to give the White Sox a 2- 0 lead, the Tigers answered in the bottom of the first inning with two run homer by Jeimer Candelario with Victor Reyes on base to tie the score at 2- 2.

The Detroit News: Tigers are sharper but fall to White Sox for second straight night

    (Photo: Jose Juarez, Associated Press)

Detroit -- Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire's message to his baseball team the day after a sloppy, uninspired 10-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox was calm, but direct. And apparently taken to heart.

"We have to finish this out," Gardenhire said. "That's our message to these guys. Don't stop playing now. Keep playing. Finish this out. Because it does mean something. What they are doing now, it means something."

The young Tigers, most of whom will be fighting for non-guaranteed roster spots next season, responded. They played a much crisper, competitive game here Saturday night.
