The experience of Archer will give the Pirates a slight edge in stealing away this series. The Pirates can put pressure on the young Ponce de Leon. I look for Pittsburgh to gain on St. Louis. I can't wait to see what the trade deadline brings to see who is serious about winning this year. I like the Pirates here today though.

I like Archer and the Pirates here. If the Pirates are going to make up the gap in the crowded NL Central, they'll need Archer to perform as he did last Friday, when he didn't factor into the decision after allowing three runs and striking out a season-high 10 over six-plus innings as Pittsburgh fell to the Cubs, 4-3. It was a great outing for Archer who showed command of his fastball and off speed pitches. Archer carried a one-hit shutout into the seventh before surrendering a homer to Kris Bryant, a single to Anthony Rizzo and a walk to Victor Caratini. Still, the Pirates were encouraged by the start, the longest for Archer since June 11 and the first one in which he reached double digits in strikeouts since he whiffed 13 batters in his start with the Tampa Bay Rays last July 22. Archer is 0-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals. Ponce de Leon lost his lone start against the Pirates last Sept. 12, when he allowed two runs over five innings as St. Louis fell, 4-3. I like the Pirates at plus odds here and the better pitching match up.

Just like that a 4-3 deficit became a 6-4 lead. The Pirates picked up a run in the ninth on a Bryan Reynolds hit, but the Cardinals held on to wrap up a 4-2 home stand.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Pirates finally score, take 1-0 lead on Cardinals

    MLB

Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty picked up where Miles Mikolas left off, blanking the Pirates in the first four innings on Tuesday at Busch Stadium, but the Pirates finally found their way home, scoring a run in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead on the Cardinals.

Cardinals pitchers had blanked the Pirates for all 13 innings of the series up to that point, and had allowed a run in just one of the previous 26 innings before Pittsburgh scored. Prior to Mikolas' shutout on Monday, Arizona scored both of its runs in the ninth inning on Sunday and didn't score in the final four innings on Saturday.
