U.S.S. Mariner: Game 72, Mariners at Athletics - And Opening Day in the Northwest League

There are not a lot of surface similarities between tonight's two starters. Bassitt's a righty, Gonzales a lefty. Bassitt throws 94 with a lollypop curve that may be the game's slowest non-knuckleball pitch. Gonzales throws 88 with a change-up that was once a true weapon, or at least projected to be. And that made Gonzales a first-round draft pick, while Bassitt lasted until the 16th round out of a non-power-conference school.

All of that said, I think it can be kind of interesting to view them as two sides of the same coin, or maybe as a couple of different pathways through a pitching career in the modern game.

Athletics Nation: Series #24: Athletics vs Mariners - Shakespearian Tragedy

This season has been a bit maddening when trying to figure out just how good this Oakland team is. Clearly, the talent on offense is there, as the A's have one of the better home run hitting attacks in the game. Apart from some players going through cold spells here and there, the A's lineup is pretty dangerous from top to bottom. The bullpen has a lot of talent, but whether it is small sample size theater or something more sinister, it hasn't performed the way it was billed to perform, and how the relievers will perform in the latter half of the year feels like a total mystery.
