San Jose Mercury News: Buster Posey returns, top prospect Joey Bart checks in with Giants in Arizona

    MLB

PHOENIX -- For the last week and a half, both the current and future faces of the San Francisco Giants have been sidelined with serious injuries.

After a nine-day absence, catcher Buster Posey returned to the Giants on Friday and will hit third in the team's series-opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Posey suffered a concussion after taking a foul ball off the side of his catcher's mask on Sunday, May 5 in Cincinnati and missed the club's last six games after being placed on the seven-day concussion injured list last Wednesday.

Posey was joined in the visiting clubhouse at Chase Field by the organization's top prospect and his eventual replacement, Joey Bart, who was in town to check in with the Giants' training staff.

McCovey Chronicles: Giants @ Diamondbacks, 5/17

    MLB

This is an interesting matchup tonight. We know that Jeff Samardzija is not the pitcher he was when the Giants signed him before the start of 2016, but consider how he's done against this particular group of Diamondbacks hitters. Well, first, the lineup:

He's never faced Christian Walker or Merill Kelly, but he has seen everybody else. Jarrod Dyson, Eduardo Escobar, David Peralta, Adam Jones, Ketel Marte, Nick Ahmed, and Alex Avila are a combined 12-for-61 with 2 home runs, a triple, and a double.

AZ Snake Pit: Series Preview #15: Diamondbacks vs. Giants

    MLB

It seems odd that it would take so long to face the Rockies and the Giants for the first time to start the season, but here we are. The Giants have struggled so far this season, limping to an 18-24 record, good for last place in the division.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are trying to recover from a rough few series. Series losses to the Rays and Braves were slightly offset by a couple of wins against the Pirates, but they look to continue the rebound against the Giants

    Game 1 Jeff Samardizja (2-1, 3.
