I actually like the Cubs in this spot even going up against Mad MAx. Scherzer isn't as dominate as he once was but he is still doing his fair share to win games. The problem has been their bull pen, which is why they have only won 2 of Max's starts and dropped seven of the nine games. On the flip side, the Cubs offense is firing on all cylinders right now, and they have won 13 out of their last 16 games entering Thursdays play. I think this game will be close but I like the more complete team to win here. Take the Cubs70%

Washington Nationals (51% consensus). The Washington Nationals will try to build upon their first series win in a month when they begin a three-game set with the visiting Chicago Cubs on Friday. Cubs Insider: Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/17/19): Cubs 14, Nationals 6 - Bryant's Three Bombs Cap Offensive Outburst
The Cubs kicked off the second leg of their road trip Friday night with a 14-6 win over the Washington Nationals. They entered play just a half game ahead of the Brewers for the top spot in the NL Central after dropping two of three games to the Reds earlier this week and the offense hadn't looked great.
Cole Hamels vs. Max Scherzer certainly made for an intriguing starting pitching matchup, though offense was the story of the game. The Cubs launched six home runs on the night, including three by Kris Bryant.
Federal Baseball: Washington Nationals' lineup for series opener with Chicago Cubs + Juan Soto struggling at the plate...
Juan Soto went 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts in the series finale with the New York Mets on Thursday, leaving him 2 for 18 since he came off a 10-game stay on the Injured List as he dealt with back spasms.
Thirty-three games in his sophomore season, the 20-year-old outfielder has a .228/.345/.415 line, five doubles, six walks, 21 walks, and 41 Ks in 145 plate appearances.
Asked to diagnose what's gone wrong for Soto so far in 2019, after his record-setting rookie campaign, Washington Nationals' manager Davey Martinez told reporters that it was a bit of a mix of Soto chasing pitches out of the zone, and opposing pitchers avoiding throwing him fastballs.
Cubs Insider: Cubs @ Nationals Series Preview (May 17 - 19): TV and Game Info, Starting Pitchers, Insights
The Cubs fly to the nation's capital for a weekend series with the Washington Nationals after losing two out of three to the Cincinnati Reds, their first series loss since the opening road trip. Coming in hot, the offense got shut down by quality Reds pitching and the Cubs bullpen couldn't cover in the low-scoring affairs. They will look to bounce back quickly and restart their series winning streak against the struggling Nationals.
Typically a strong contender in the NL East, the Nats expected to compete against the young Braves and Phillies. However, their rough start has them seven games below .
Obstructed View: Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (25-16) at Washington Nationals (18-25)
It's been a rough go of it for the Nats this year, just won their first series in over a month. Former Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez doesn't seem to have brought that Joe Maddon magic along with him, and every new team that comes into DC has to be double checking wikipedia before the series to see if he's still in charge over there.Team Leaders
