  • ***BOSTON -1.5 (-140)*** This is a very early start and could be wet and rainy, so weird things could happen, but I'm not giving the O's a chance with Straily on the mound. Straily has given up 13 hits and 10 runs in just 4.2 innings of work this season and was about just as bad in his two seasons with the Miami Marlins. Straily is a homer machine and often gets blasted. This one has the makings to get ugly.

    My Pick: Boston -250 60%

Fansided: Red Sox show versatility in Patriots' Day clash with Orioles

Well, friends, this has been the dictionary definition of a failure as far as this Red Sox homestand is concerned. While facing two teams that will undoubtedly find their way to the bottom of the division by season's end, Boston was only able to achieve a 3-3 record. It's just unacceptable for a defending World Series Champion to have such a poor showing against awful teams.

Looking at the difficulty of schedule when heading into the homestand it was totally realistic to walk away 5-1 or even 4-2, but 3-3 is just not good at all. With the first series against the Yankees set to begin on Tuesday in the Bronx, there's just no more room for the type of play that the Red Sox continue to churn out.

Baltimore Sun: Orioles ride bounce-back start from Dan Straily, big innings to 8-1 win over Red Sox

Orioles right-hander Dan Straily carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and was as good Monday as he was bad in his first two appearances with the team, helping them to an 8-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Patriots Day at Fenway Park.

Straily, who allowed two home runs both in his debut relief appearance with the Orioles and his first start last week, allowed just two hits and one run as the Orioles used home runs by Dwight Smith Jr. and Chris Davis and a three-hit day by Renato Nunez to leave Boston with a four-game series split.

Over the Monster: Red Sox 1, Orioles 8: The Hospital Red Sox aren't as fun as their basketball counterparts

If you follow the Celtics on the internet, you've probably heard of the Hospital Celtics. This is when the Celtics have a number of injuries and have to play with strange lineups, yet they seem to win far more often than they ever should. Today, we saw the Hospital Red Sox, and it didn't go as well. They had J.D. Martinez in right, Steve Pearce in left, and oh yeah Christian Vazquez was playing second base. The worst part is, defense (at least from those guys) wasn't the issue here.

Baltimore Sun: Orioles manager Brandon Hyde ejected for arguing slide rule call in Patriots Day matinee against Red Sox

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was ejected from Monday's Patriots Day matinee against the Boston Red Sox for arguing a slide-rule interpretation at second base after an unsuccessful replay review.

With runners on first and third and no outs in the fifth inning, Red Sox left fielder Steve Pearce hit a ground ball to third base. Rio Ruiz fielded it cleanly and relayed to second baseman Jonathan Villar.

Villar hesitated slightly before making the throw to first base as Rafael Devers appeared to slide through second base and stand up into Villar's lower half.

Over the Monster: Game 17 Gamethread: Red Sox vs. Orioles

We've got a little morning baseball on the docket today for the annual Patriots Day game. Weather could be a factor here, but as of now they are still planning to start this one on time. It's sure to be a very strange game, because Christian Vazquez is starting at second base. Baseball is the weirdest. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM ET, and this will be your space to discuss the action.

Baltimore Sun: New Orioles starter Dan Straily knows what he needs to fix before Monday's start against Red Sox

Dan Straily, the right-hander signed a week into the Orioles season, will start Monday one year and a day after his new rotation-mate Alex Cobb made his season debut at Fenway Park after signing late in the spring himself.

Cobb's advice to Straily, who has given up 10 runs on 13 hits -- including four home runs -- in 4 2/3 innings over one relief appearance and one start in an Orioles uniform so far?

"His biggest advice to me was don't look at your stat line for a little while," Straily said. "When you have this much time off, you get up there and you kind of feel like you're really ready to go, then the results just say you weren't.
