Cincinnati.com: Instant analysis: Xavier survives scare from Evansville, improves to 2-0

    NCAAB

Xavier's first week of college basketball was intense. Much more dramatic than anticipated.

It featured two back-and-forth battles that carried deep into the second half with Saturday's game against Evansville - in front of more than 10,500 fans in the Cintas Center - going right down to the wire in a 91-85 Xavier win.

Leading 78-76 with under six minutes to play, Xavier went on a 9-0 run, sparked by guard Paul Scruggs and forward Tyrique Jones, both of whom had career nights and saved the day for the Musketeers.

Scruggs poured in a career-high 24 points with six rebounds and five assists.

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Less than 48 hours removed from a deflating opening night loss to Illinois, the University of Evansville men's basketball team gave Xavier all they could handle before falling in Cincinnati Saturday afternoon. Aces Insider Joe Downs has the story from the Cintas Center.

Cincinnati.com: Xavier basketball survives Evansville: 'It's all about defense and that's it'

    NCAAB

Xavier's first week of college basketball was intense. Much more dramatic than anticipated.

It featured two back-and-forth battles that carried deep into the second half with Saturday's game against Evansville - in front of more than 10,500 fans in the Cintas Center - going right down to the wire in a 91-85 Xavier win, despite the Musketeers going without a field goal over the final 3:15 of the game.

"I want to give Evansville a lot of credit," said Xavier head coach Travis Steele. "They gave us a great test today. They made a lot of shots.

Cincinnati.com: Live coverage: Xavier basketball welcomes Evansville in its second test of the season

    NCAAB

Pre-game update, 3:45 p.m. - Xavier's starting lineup will be guard Paul Scruggs, guard Kyle Castlin, forward Naji Marshall, forward Ryan Welage and forward Tyrique Jones.

Evansville's starting K.J. Riley, Marty Hill, Shea Feehan, Evan Kuhlman, a Cincinnati native and graduate of Lakota East, and John Hall.

Saturday's slate against Evansville (4 p.m., FSN) will be the first glimpse this season of Xavier's entire basketball roster on the floor together.

Junior point guard Quentin Goodin, who's missed the last month of basketball activities with a left shoulder injury, should make his season debut after returning to practice over the last week.

Cincinnati.com: Live coverage: Quentin Goodin provides spark in return, Xavier leads Evansville 43-28

    NCAAB

Xavier 43, Evansville 28, 3:46 first half - Paul Scruggs just pulled off a nice spin move and lay-up in traffic at the rim. Coming down the floor, though, Scruggs and Evansville's Marty Hill were having a heated discussion and both were assessed technical fouls.

Xavier 30, Evansville 20, 9:30 first half - Quentin Goodin's more than alright. The Xavier guard, in his first action of the season, just knocked down three 3-pointers. Goodin has 12 points in seven minutes of action.

Xavier 16, Evansville 14, 12:25 first half - Naji Marshall with a little spark for Xavier.

Banners on the Parkway: Xavier v. Evansville: preview, matchups, keys to the game

    NCAAB

Xavier didn't exactly set the world on fire in game one of the Steele Era, briefly trailing IUPUI in the second half. An unspeakable barrage from Ryan Welage and a strong effort from defensive juggernaut and national leader in block rate Zach Hankins got Xavier across the line with room to spare, but it was a reminder of why major conference teams start the season with borderline unloseable buy games.

Evansville was just that for Illinois. Brad Underwood's charges ran the Purple Aces off the court in the midweek fixture to the tune of a 99-60 thumping.
