Tampa Bay Rays vs Toronto Blue Jays 9/15/2021

Predictions & Game Chat

Today we have the rubber match between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays with Michael Wacha facing off against Robbie Ray. The Rays bounced back with a big 2-0 win yesterday silencing Toronto's bats. Today I expect the Jays to bounce back and win the final game of this series with Robbie Ray on the mound.

Ray has been a much better pitcher at home this year. In his 15 home starts, Toronto is 9-6 and Ray has a 2.35 ERA. Wacha has not been nearly as good on the road with a 6.28 ERA compared to his 4.44 ERA at home. Both of these teams are very talented but I think Toronto has a major advantage in today's pitching matchup.

Arozarena and Margot are hitting 1-2 in the Rays lineup and have not had success against Ray in their career with neither hitting over .179 against him.

I like Blue Jays ML despite the steep price.

Heading into this afternoon game, Tampa Bay sits at an impressive 90 wins. SP Michael Wacha relies on getting hitters to chase pitches outside the zone with a rank in the 91st percentile. However, he also is in the 85th percentile in walk percentage. Wacha tries to get hitters swinging at bad pitches because hitters are having no problem making strong contact. Tampa is near the top 10 in offensive categories such as woba, slg and obp.

Toronto has the clear pitching advantage as Robbi Ray is having a career season with a 2.69 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He is one of the league's premier strikeout pitchers but also ranks in the 77th percentile in walks. This speaks to just how well he is at limiting opponent hitting. Over his past 50 batters faced, Ray has performed more in line with league average pitcher in (xwoba).

Recently Toronto has been hot at home winning their last 5 games. I actually like the upset in this matchup, going with the Rays +150 moneyline.

The Blue Jays are the hottest team in the game, sporting a sparkling 12-2 record in their last 14 games overall including a decisive 8-1 win against the Rays in the series opener.

The Rays lost a series in Detroit last weekend and have dropped four out of their last six games. They have all but won the AL East while Toronto is fighting with the Red Sox and Yankees in the Wildcard.

Furthermore, this pitching matchup heavily favors Toronto. Robbie Ray has now limited his opponent to two or fewer runs in eight out of his last nine starts. Rays’ starter Michael Wacha has posted an abysmal 6.28 ERA on the road and the Jays’ bats are clicking at the plate.

Prediction: Toronto Blue Jays to carry the day.

The Rays shut out a Blue Jays offense that had been unstoppable in their win Tuesday night. Looking to take the series and inch closer to another division title, Michael Wacha will be tasked with slowing them down again. His ERA on the season is an ugly 5.37, but his last 3 starts have actually been good even though they all came against bad teams. His job will be to minimize the damage for about 5 innings and let the highest-scoring offense and bullpen handle the rest.

The Jays will likely be hungry to get back on track, especially knowing that Wacha has been very hittable this season. Robbie Ray will start against Tampa for the fifth time this year and he enters with a 2.00 ERA so far against them. Despite his excellent starts, the team is only 1-3 in those games, however. He had a poor outing last time out (sub-50.0 game score), but on the season has responded to each of those with a 1-run outing of at least 6 innings.

Pick: I like the Jays in this one. The team has been hitting so well and Wacha has been wildly inconsistent. I think they get to him, Ray pitches well, and the bullpen holds on for the win. Also to note: it's a day game where Ray has a 1.95 ERA, and Wacha has a 6.32.
