Chicago Sun-Times: 'Whatever it takes': Cubs beat Padres to keep share of playoff position, focus on 16-game sprint

SAN DIEGO - Cubs manager Joe Maddon dismissed the idea of having a team meeting before Thursday's series finale in San Diego, even after a bad week of bad losses and critical, lost ground in the playoff chase.

But during their 4-1 victory over the Padres he was reminded of the best reason he should have reconsidered.

"You always should choose your team meetings based on who your starting pitcher is the next game," he said. "If you don't, then you're making a huge mistake."

Consider Yu Darvish's 11th start into a huge second half for the Cubs a missed opportunity to assure results for a nice ass-kicking meeting - but nonetheless a crucial seized one for a team teetering on the brink of another season-closing crash.

SignOnSanDiego.com: Chris Paddack remains strong as he nears season's end, Padres beat Cubs again

Chris Paddack might have finished his rookie season stronger than he started it.

The right-hander began the Padres' 4-0 victory over the Cubs on Wednesday night at Petco Park with six shutout innings.

Manuel Margot homered in the fifth inning off Rancho Bernardo High alumnus Cole Hamels, Ty France scored on a wild pitch by reliever Brad Wieck in the sixth and Wil Myers' single off Duane Underwood Jr. in the seventh drove in the final two runs.

David Bednar pitched a scoreless seventh, and Trey Wingenter did the same over the eighth and ninth, as the Padres beat the Cubs for the second straight night.

Gaslamp Ball: Paddack, Margot lead Padres to win over Cubs

The Padres won their second consecutive game over the Cubs on Wednesday night at Petco Park.

Manuel Margot led the charge offensively for San Diego, opening the scoring with his 12th homer of the year in the fifth, notching two more hits, stealing a base and robbing a home run all in a night's work.

Chris Paddack was brilliant in what might be one of the final starts of his 2019 season: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. He's allowed just one run over his last 18.
