  • Fansided: Texas Football: What can be learned from Texas A&M's win over LSU

What can Texas football learn from a hated rival that it hasn't faced in more than seven seasons for the upcoming regular season slate? Since the Texas A&M Aggies bolted from the Big 12 and joined the SEC West, there is at least film to gauge from its newfound rivalry against the LSU Tigers.

Not only is the matchup for Texas football against LSU this coming season the biggest non-conference game on the slate, it is one of the most impactful in the entire country. If Texas football is able to bounce LSU in Week 2 of the 2019 regular season, this team would immediately vault into the thick of College Football Playoff contention.

  • Fansided: Texas High School Football coaching ranks sees Art Briles return

An idea that many had to think would never resurface in the world of college or high school football in the state of Texas just became a reality. Mount Vernon Independent hired former Baylor Bears head football coach Art Briles to coach its football team it announced over the weekend.

This will be the first time that we see Art Briles returning to the world of coaching football at any level since the Baylor football program let him go amid a slew of scandals and investigations back in the 2016 off-season. The last full season that Briles coached Baylor was during the 2015 campaign when he nearly led his team to a Big 12 Championship for the second time.

The NCAA West Preliminaries field features the top 48 qualifiers from the West Region of the country with the top 12 finishers advancing to the National Championship.

Barking Carnival: Mount Vernon HS Hires Art Briles as Football Coach

Mount Vernon has boldly gone where no college or HS program would and hired Art Briles as their new football coach.

What the hell Tigers, why not go for the Daily Double and get a new basketball coach as well.

  • Dallas Morning News: Like it or not, Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma should brace for 11 a.m. kickoffs once again with FOX's latest move

Chuck Carlton, Big 12 beat writer for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, answered your questions about the league in a live chat Thursday. Below are highlights, edited for clarity. Check out the full chat here.

How upset do you expect Lincoln Riley is about more 11 a.m. starts? He complained about them last season. Thanks a lot, FOX.

Carlton: Lincoln Riley isn't thrilled at the prospect of early kickoffs. Neither is athletic director Joe Castiglione. And they aren't alone. Nobody in the Big 12 really likes 11 a.

  • Fansided: Texas Football: Oklahoma news report fan sparks "Horns down" debate

Last year, we saw the Texas football program get involved with a weird off-the-field issue that the Big 12 had to come down on hard. Texas football didn't have a huge outcry as it related to the "Horns down" symbol, but the Big 12 surely had its own opinion on the matter.

But the hated rival Oklahoma Sooners couldn't seem to get out of the mode that is the college football off-season rivalry by sparking the "Horns down" outcry in the weirdest of moments. A local news report in the state of Oklahoma had a "legendary fan" that was stranded in the string of horrible weather they got lately north of the Red River flash that symbol.

  • Dallas Morning News: Texas drives home its commitment to football coach Tom Herman with 2-year contract extension

Without much drama or fanfare, Texas has given football coach Tom Herman a two-year contract extension.

The UT System board of regents officially approved the deal Thursday. Herman will make $6.5 million in 2022 and $6.75 million in 2023.

For any Texas fan who thinks of Shaka Smart and his buyout and winces at long-term contracts, this is different. Herman received a five-year contract when he was hired after the 2016 season to replace Charlie Strong. This merely restores the length of that deal, not unreasonable in the current environment given that Texas has gone from five wins in Strong's final year to seven wins in 2018 and 10 wins last season, including a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.

  • Fansided: Texas Football: Where Athlon ranked Sam Ehlinger among 2019 Big 12 QB's

The Big 12 is usually a stacked conference in terms of the prowess and national prominence of its quarterbacks. Texas football could have the best quarterback in the Big 12 rostered this year. Rising junior star signal caller Sam Ehlinger gained loads of notoriety with his breakthrough sophomore campaign.

Last season, Ehlinger vaulted from a borderline starting-caliber quarterback for Texas football to one of the best in the nation by the time bowl season ended. His efficiency with more than 40 total touchdowns and less than 10 turnovers was insane. He pretty much completely patched his turnover flaws he had from his freshman season on the Forty Acres and won a New Year's Six Bowl over the Georgia Bulldogs in the process.

  • Dallas Morning News: Texas roster rankings, Nos. 5-1: Injuries are a concern, but talent is rampant

With spring football in the rearview mirror, SportsDay this week is breaking down the Texas Longhorns' top 15 players heading into the 2019 season. Nos. 15-11 were highlighted Monday, and Nos. 10-6 were highlighted Wednesday.

Here are the rankings, Nos. 5-1, for Texas' roster:

    5. Caden Sterns, sophomore, safety

"The Wolf" made quite an impact starting as a true freshman in 2018. Sterns finished the year tied for second in the Big 12 in interceptions with four, and he was honored at the end of the season as the Big 12 freshman of the year.

  • Fansided: Texas Football: Who 247Sports ranked as best all-time Longhorn?

List season has arrived in the world of college football and the Texas football program. As evident by an abundance of lists and rankings from national college football media outlets like ESPN, Athlon Sports, and 247Sports, this is a good time of year to reflect on what happened last season and further in the past for the Texas football program.

This time, 247Sports jumped into the conversation that is the best players ever to suit up for the Texas football program. The best players to ever play for Texas football is a difficult list just since there are so many great ones to choose from.

  • Fansided: Charles Omenihu could be steal of the fifth round for the Texans

Even though it's all quiet on the front of the college football off-season with spring ball well in the books, NFL OTA's are underway. Former stars of the Texas Longhorns football program in the NFL are back in action. There is a good amount to dissect from former Longhorns from Rookie Mini Camps too that were picked up as undrafted free agents or in the 2019 NFL Draft. One name to watch that sits among the former Longhorns now in the NFL is Houston Texans rookie defensive end Charles Omenihu.

In the 2019 NFL Draft, Omenihu was the fifth round pick of the Texans.

  • Official Site of the Longhorns: Texas Track & Field Turns in Solid Day One Effort at NCAA West Preliminaries

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Track & Field opened competition at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday with a pair of Longhorns punching their ticket to the NCAA Championship at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin (June 5-8). Nine other Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinal round and will compete for a spot in the semifinals and an NCAA Championship berth over the next two days. The NCAA West Preliminaries field features the top 48 qualifiers from the West Region of the country with the top 12 finishers advancing to the National Championship Meet in two weeks.

Two UT long jumpers earned NCAA Championship bids on day one of the NCAA West Prelims with senior Steffin McCarter posting the top jump of the meet with a wind aided 25-11 1/2 (7.

  • Burnt Orange Nation: Alabama out-classes Texas in 3-0 victory

The postseason brilliance of the Alabama Crimson Tide at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa continued on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over the Texas Longhorns that puts head coach Mike White's team on the verge of elimination heading into Friday's contest.

All of the elements that make the Alabama offense so dangerous were on display. In the third inning, Texas ace Miranda Elish hit the leadoff batter. Due to the liberal substitution rules in softball, the Crimson Tide used a pinch runner. With catcher Mary Iakopo worried about the baserunner, she tried a snap throw to first base, but Lauren Burke wasn't there to cover, allowing a sacrifice bunt to further the pressure on Elish with the runner moving to third base.

  • Burnt Orange Nation: 3-star CB Joshua Eaton includes Texas in top group

After seeing his recruiting stock soar throughout the spring, Houston Aldine MacArthur cornerback Joshua Eaton has trimmed his list of 29 scholarship offers to a top 12 list.

Unsurprisingly, the Texas Longhorns survived the cut, alongside Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, TCU, and Arkansas.
