Litter Box Cats: Recap: Panthers get back to .500 with 4-2 win over Islanders

On Saturday night, the Florida Panthers defeated the New York Islanders by a 4-2 score at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL.

The Panthers have now won three games in a row after starting the season with a deplorable 2-5-3 mark. Later this afternoon, they have a chance to make it four when the Ottawa Senators come to town.

    First Period

Denis Malgin (1) finally scored for the first time this season on a perfect feed from Jared McCann to take an early lead with six minutes gone in the first period.

Lighthouse Hockey: Panthers 4, Islanders 2 (EN): Another blown lead in Florida

With the New York Islanders in town to play the Florida Panthers, the Panthers used the game as an opportunity to celebrate the late Bill Torrey, the "original Panther," and the man who built the dynasty Islanders. Whether you experienced the dynasty Islanders in person or are a later-generation fan, or are a new fan who found the team for whatever reason, Bill Torrey is part of the reason you're an Islanders fan, directly or indirectly. It was a nice touch for both teams to sport bowtie stickers on their helmets and for all the coaches to wear bowties instead of their usual ties.

Fansided: New York Islanders Few Errors Equal Loss vs. Florida Panthers (Highlights)

The New York Islanders seven game point streak came to an end against the Tampa Bay Lightning. After playing even against one of the better teams in the league a mistake in the final seconds cost them.

The lesson for the Isles going into the games versus the Panthers would be to manage the game. Play the system don't go rogue and things should workout.

Unfortunately a few unnecessary penalties would prove to be the key to back-to-back 4-2 losses for the Islanders.

    First Period

For most of the season the New York Islanders have come out flat in the first period.

Miami Herald: Florida Panthers to honor first president Bill Torrey before game against Islanders

Florida Panthers forward Nick Bjugstad always relished the opportunity to talk with Bill Torrey.

No matter the circumstance, Bjugstad said, Torrey's infectious positive persona and vast knowledge of the game made it tough to leave the conversation without a smile and a newfound nugget of information or two.

"Win or lose, he always kind of had that energy that it's a fun game that we're playing. He always made you feel like you were special," Bjugstad said. "It didn't matter who you were."

That made Torrey's death in May at the age of 83 in his West Palm Beach home even harder to fathom for the Panthers organization.

Newsday: Florida Panthers honor Bill Torrey before game against Islanders

SUNRISE, Fla. - The late Bill Torrey may have identified himself more with the Panthers once he joined the organization as president in 1993, but he never stopped watching the Islanders.

"He'd been with the Panthers for 25 years, he wanted to see hockey succeed here so badly," the Hall of Fame NHL executive's son, Rich Torrey, told Newsday. "Out of the side of his eye, the whole time here, he always watched the Islanders. The surroundings of how he ended up leaving them were painful. I don't know if he ever really got over it."

The Panthers honored Bill Torrey, who passed away at his West Palm Beach, Florida home on May 3 at age 83, with a simple yet tasteful pre-ceremony prior to Saturday night's match with the Islanders at BB&T Center as part of their Legacy Saturdays series.

Fansided: Florida Panthers Host the New York Islanders for Saturday Showdown

The Florida Panthers started out pretty rough, and still rank tied for last in the National Hockey League with 11 points in the standings. Fortunately, they have at least a game-in-hand on every other team in the NHL. Their points percentage has them in 29th.

For the Panthers, this is the second game of a three-game homestand. They defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 4-1 on Thursday and will finish up against the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night. For the first time this season, they have won consecutive games. They're going for a third straight tonight.

Litter Box Cats: GameDay Caterwaul: Florida Panthers vs New York Islanders

Scouting Report (Courtesy of Stats LLC)

The Florida Panthers were supposed to be serious playoff contenders this season, and the New York Islanders, well, weren't.

But through roughly the first-eighth of this season, the opposite seemed true.

The Islanders, who visit the Panthers on Saturday night at the BB&T Center, entered the weekend atop the Metropolitan Division with 18 points and an 8-5-2 record.

New York hasn't seemed bothered by what many hockey writers predicted would be a catastrophe for the franchise -- superstar center John Tavares' decision to bolt to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent.
