Just to make it clear: no, this will not be the reunion with Cam Ward on the ice. Our longtime goaltender will likely be slated to start net on Monday in Carolina -- a more fitting time for tribute.
Second City Hockey: Despite furious comeback, Blackhawks fall 4-3 to Hurricanes in Jeremy Colliton's debut
The first game of the Jeremy Colliton Era for the Blackhawks did not go as planned in a 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday at the United Center.
In fact, for 22 minutes it looked disastrous.
The Hurricanes struck three times in the opening period. Andrei Svechnikov buried the first goal on a rebound after he swept it past Corey Crawford while falling down. Jaccob Slavin found a loose puck on a rebound and buried it three minutes later. Phillip Di Giuseppe then scored on a 3-on-1 rush to push the Carolina lead to 3-0.
Canes Country: Hurricanes Survive Comeback Bid, Beat Blackhawks to End Losing Streak
With Scott Darling in the net, the Carolina Hurricanes desperately needed something to feel good about as they put the finishing touches on what had been a very disappointing road trip.
The Chicago Blackhawks got better and better as Thursday's game went on, but the Hurricanes found a way to get back in the win column and finished on the right side of a 4-3 final score.
The first period was one hell of a spectacle.
From the outset, the Hurricanes weren't very organized. There were a couple of painful lapses in judgement, both with and without the puck.
Consensus betting prediction from the Covers.com community:
Chicago Blackhawks (68% consensus). The Chicago Blackhawks will play under a different coach for the first time since the fifth game of the 2008-09 season when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday in a matchup of struggling teams. Joel Quenneville, the second-winningest coach in NHL history who won Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2010, 2013 and 2015, was relieved of his duties Tuesday after the Blackhawks missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2007-08 and got off to a slow start this year... http://bit.ly/2B2oZgE
