Detroit Free Press: Despite ugly win, Detroit Lions find relief against Arizona Cardinals

    NFL

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It was tough to watch, one of those ugly, misshapen games that's no good for ratings. But in the Detroit Lions locker room, it was a sight for sore eyes all the same.

The Lions beat the Arizona Cardinals, 17-3, Sunday in a game that was pretty much what you'd expect from two of the most offensively inept teams in the NFL.

Darius Slay and Zach Zenner scored the game's only touchdowns, and Matthew Stafford threw for 101 yards -- his lowest total since he injured his throwing shoulder in Week 1 of the 2010 season -- but the Lions kept their slim playoff hopes alive with three weeks to play.

azcentral.com: Cardinals offense manages to underachieve against Lions despite already low expectations

    NFL

Not much was expected from the Cardinals offense on Sunday, and yet it failed miserably to reach even that low standard in the 17-3 loss to the Lions.

The Cardinals could make excuses. Four rookies started, including three on the offensive line and one at quarterback. Another rookie, receiver Christian Kirk, suffered a season-ending injury last week. The starting right tackle, Joe Barksdale, joined the. team on Wednesday.

Only the delusional thought the Cardinals had a chance to join the NFL's offensive revolution Sunday, even though they were playing the Lions. But it didn't take a hallucination to envision them beating the Lions, who are nearly as bad on offense as the Cardinals.

The Detroit News: Lions down sack leader Kennard against Cardinals

    NFL

This week's Lions-Cardinals game has NFL Draft implications. Justin Rogers and John Niyo break the game down and talk about Detroit's offseason needs. Justin Rogers, The Detroit News

Glendale, Ariz. -- The Detroit Lions will be without linebacker Devon Kennard for Sunday's matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. He had been listed as questionable with a hip injury he suffered last week against the Los Angeles Rams.

Kennard, the team's top free-agent signing from last offseason, came into the day as the Lions' sack leader, recording 6.0 through 12 games. Against the Rams, Eli Harold replaced Kennard, playing a season-high 39 snaps.

Revenge of the Birds: Arizona Cardinals vs Detroit Lions first half game thread

    NFL

With only four games left we'll see how the season finishes up, but the next two weeks look like, at least on paper, the Cardinals best chance for two more wins.

The Cardinals come in needing to continue to establish their running game, featuring both of David Johnson and rookie Chase Edmonds.

With the injury to Christian Kirk and Chad Williams inactive for another game, it'll be interesting to see how the Cardinals deploy their offensive weapons.

Will we see even more of Johnson and Edmonds on the field together?

It had been nearly a month since the Arizona Cardinals had won a football game, so now we wait to see how they follow it up.

Pride Of Detroit: The Cheat Sheet: Lions defensive line could be the difference against the Cardinals

    NFL

This week's game against the Detroit Lions will be the Arizona Cardinals' ninth different combination along the offensive line this season.

Maybe more stunning is this will be their seventh straight game with a different combination of starters along the offensive line. That can't make rookie quarterback Josh Rosen feel good going into this game.

The Cardinals have given up only given up 32 sacks (15th in the NFL), but they've allowed 155 pressures according to Pro Football Focus (fourth highest in the NFL).

David Johnson has also struggled this year behind that maligned offensive line, averaging just 3.

The Detroit News: Five things to watch: Lions vs. Cardinals

    NFL

This week's Lions-Cardinals game has NFL Draft implications. Justin Rogers and John Niyo break the game down and talk about Detroit's offseason needs. Justin Rogers, The Detroit News

If it seems like the Lions usually wilt in the Arizona heat, it's because they do.

The Cardinals have defeated the Lions in seven of the last eight meetings and 12 of the last 16.

The Lions have not won in Arizona in 25 years, losing eight straight since 1993. That December day, Erik Kramer threw touchdown passes to Herman Moore, Willie Green and Rodney Holman and the Lions beat the Phoenix Cardinals 21-14, breaking a three-game losing streak and starting a push to the playoffs.

azcentral.com: Cardinals edge rusher Chandler Jones could feast on sacks against Lions

    NFL

Larry Fitzgerald has played on Cardinals teams with their share of quarterback killers, quintessential pass-rushing stars that have ranged from long-term mercenaries to short-term assassins.

They've included memorable names such as Calais Campbell, Bertrand Berry and Darnell Dockett. And they've included forgettable ones such as Dwight Freeney, John Abraham and Daryl Washington.

But in Fitzgerald's 15 years with the franchise, the wide receiver freely admits he's never been on a team with the edge-rushing skills as that of current Cardinals defensive end Chandler Jones. Since Arizona traded guard Jonathan Cooper and a second-round draft pick to the Patriots for Jones in March 2016, nobody has been better at ransacking quarterbacks.

Fansided: Lions at Cardinals: Game time, stream, channel, more info

There aren't many teams in the NFL that are struggling more than the 4-8 Detroit Lions have this season. But one of them is certainly the 3-9 Arizona Cardinals.

The Lions have lost five of their last six contests after posting solid wins over the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and the Green Bay Packers. As for the Cardinals, they have lost three out of their last four although the team is coming off a surprising victory over the Packers in Week 13. Green Bay immediately fired their longtime head coach, Mike McCarthy, following the loss.

Pride Of Detroit: How to watch Lions vs. Cardinals: Kickoff time, online streaming, TV schedule, more

    NFL

We're officially in the final stretch of the Detroit Lions' 2018 season. With just the final quarter of the season left to go, fans were hoping for some more exciting games on the docket.

Unfortunately, both the Cardinals and Lions are going through some serious struggles. Both teams are sporting first-time head coaches and the though the end results have been similar, the paths to a losing season have been much different.

For the Lions, high hopes from back-to-back 9-7 season were quickly dashed after the team couldn't get thing right defensively, giving up huge plays on the ground and hard providing any resistance through the air.

All the pounding that Matthew Stafford has taken this season is finally starting to take its toll, and the Detroit Lions quarterback is questionable for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals because of a back injury.

Stafford has started 124 consecutive games, the third longest streak among active NFL quarterbacks, and should be able to extend that streak Sunday.

Detroit Free Press: Detroit Lions' Matthew Stafford not thinking his tenure, just Cardinals

    NFL

Free Press sports writers Dave Birkett and Carlos Monarrez preview the Detroit Lions' game against the Arizona Cardinals. Carlos Monarrez and Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press

As Matthew Stafford prepares to wrap up his 10th NFL season, he is guaranteed to post his sixth season without a winning record as the Detroit Lions' quarterback.

The Lions are 0-3 in the postseason with Stafford. They are likely to miss the playoffs for a second straight year and for the third time in four years.

With little to show a decade into Stafford's tenure, criticism has mounted and talk of trading Stafford has become a popular subject among fans and media.

Pride Of Detroit: Detroit Lions facing a beat-up Arizona Cardinals team

    NFL

While on the surface, things may be looking up for the Arizona Cardinals--after all, they just pulled off a huge upset over a desperate Green Bay Packers teams--their roster is only continuing to get worse. This week alone, the Cardinals sent four players to injured reserves: starting guard Mike Iupati, starting left tackle D.J. Humphries, leading receiver and second-round pick Christian Kirk, and defensive tackle Olsen Pierre.

The Cardinals now have 13 players on injured reserve, and they have been particularly devastated on the offensive line.
