Saints vs Panthers
Prediction Odds and Preview

By Staff Writer, Drew_Westcott

New Orleans Saints 12-3 (10-5 ATS) are playing Carolina Panthers 5-10 (6-8-1 ATS) on Dec 29, 2019, 1:00pm ET at Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers opened at +11 in Vegas and the current line is CAR +13.

While Carolina has little to nothing to play for outside of tryouts under a new coaching staff in 2020, the Saints have plenty to play for in the final week of the regular season. The Saints (12-3) are still playing for playoff seeding as a victory over the Panthers and a loss by either the Packers (at Lions) or 49ers (at Seahawks) gives them a first-round bye. Additionally, if New Orleans wins and Green Bay and San Francisco both lose, then the Saints will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Michael Thomas already has 1,688 receiving yards along with 9 TDs. What's most impressive though, is Thomas has already set an NFL record with 145 receptions which is the most in a single season. He will look to exceed the 150 reception mark for the first time in NFL History. One of the keys to New Orleans' success this year has been avoiding turnovers. The Saints sit atop the NFL with just eight giveaways. Carolina has been one of the worst in the NFL in turnover +/1 with a cumulative -11 (27th). Drew Brees and co. should be able to handle business early in this one and likely get a rest in the second half.

Like the NFL Gods often do, the Panthers took the crown for early season sweethearts and shockers and crashed back to reality, aka the cellar of their division by seasons end. They have completely imploded over the past two months of the regular season and surprisingly fired two-time Coach of the Year, Ron Riveria during the trip to the NFL slums. The Panthers have lost seven straight and started Rookie QB Will Grier last week where he did anything but shine for an offense that scored six points on two field goals and lost by thirty-two. Christian McCaffery has 1,361 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns and nearly 1,000 recieving yards on the year. Unfortunately for him, the Saints haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in over two seasons and are 5th in the NFL against the run.

- New Orleans is 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games
- New Orleans are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games against Carolina.
- Carolina is 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Carolina's last 5 games at home.

SAINTS: Drew Brees (QB) Probable, Vonn Bell (S) Out, Kiko Alonso (LB) Probable
PANTHERS: Shaq Thompson (LB) Out, DJ Moore (WR) Out, Marquis Haynes (LB) Questionable

Bank of America Stadium will be at less than capacity and the breakdown will probably favor the visitors. Regardless of the atmosphere, New Orleans should have little trouble taking care of business on Sunday afternoon, even with backups coming in if this one gets lopsided early. Teddy Bridgewater would come in and stack his resume if that's the case and he, like Drew Brees, can torch this Panthers defense that is 31st in defense this year. New Orleans has a lot to gain and its offense is clicking. PICK: Saints -13

    • Last weekend, the same Colts team thrashed the Carolina and I don't think the Panthers stand a chance against the Saints today. New Orleans is MUCH better in every facet of the game, and are playing to earn a first-round bye. The Panthers have nothing to gain today other than bettering their draft pick. New Orleans should roll today but 13.5 is a thick spread so treading lightly.

    • All over the Saints here. They're 5th against the run and the Panthers can't do anything on offense outside of give it to RUN DMC. That's even when they were a winning team. This is a Carolina team that is ready to pack it up. Of all the double-digit, left for dead matchups week 17 gives us, this is the one I consider a lock on the favorite.

    • Stat to know:New Orleans receiverMichael Thomasis 112 receiving yards shy of 1,800 for the season. He'd be only the fifth player in NFL history to reach the mark in a season (Jerry Rice in 1995, Calvin Johnson in 2012, Julio Jones in 2015 and Antonio Brown in 2015).

What's at stake:The Saints can clinch a first-round bye with a win and a loss by either the 49ers or Packers, or by victories by the Packers and Seahawks. To get the No. 1 seed, the Saints need a win, along with losses by the 49ers and Packers. Otherwise, they will be the No. 3 seed. FPI projects the Panthers to lose and get the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 draft.

    • METAIRIE, La. -- Sean Payton didn't hesitate when asked whether the New Orleans Saints might consider resting starters at Carolina in Week 17-- even though quarterback Drew Brees and receiver Michael Thomas were among those listed as limited in Wednesday's walk-through practice."No, no, no, no, no, no. Absolutely no," Payton said. "We're still playing for the 1-, 2- or 3-seed."
