The Bird Writes: Jrue Holiday shuts down Devin Booker as New Orleans Pelicans breeze by Phoenix Suns, 119-99

Without Elfrid Payton and Nikola Mirotic, the New Orleans Pelicans still managed to lead from start to finish en route to a 119-99 win over the Phoenix Suns, securing two much-needed victories at home and improving to 6-6 overall.

Despite the faster style of play in the league, this marks the second straight game the Pelicans have held an opponent under 100 points and the first victory by double digits since the home opener against Sacramento on Oct. 19. Four of the five starters scored in double figures as the offense moved the ball well enough to assist on 66 percent of its made field goals.

The Bird Writes: Game 12: Elfrid Payton and Nikola Mirotic out for New Orleans Pelicans in matchup against Phoenix Suns

Elfrid Payton will not return to the active lineup tonight against the Phoenix Suns, making it seven straight contests he'll miss due to a sprained right ankle. In addition, the New Orleans Pelicans will be without the services of Nikola Mirotic, who turned his right ankle in the last game against the Bulls and experienced some swelling.

Julius Randle is expected to replace Mirotic in the starting lineup, and expect Gentry to utilize Cheick Diallo and likely at least one of Jahlil Okafor or Solomon Hill.

Bright Side Of The Sun: Game Preview: Will the Suns finally shine in New Orleans?

The Time: 5:00 pm (Phoenix time)

    TV: Fox Sports Arizona

    Radio: 98.7 FM

The Pelicans started the season hot with a 4-0 win streak but then got hit by the injury bug and lost their next six games before finally ending that streak against Chicago on Wednesday night. When the Suns hit their court today, the Pelicans will be mostly - if not completely - back to full strength. At this point, the only remaining question mark in the Pelicans' starting lineup is former Sun, Elfrid Payton. Payton has been sidelined with a badly sprained ankle since Oct.

The Bird Writes: NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans look to slow Devin Booker and start another win streak against Phoenix Suns

The New Orleans Pelicans (5-6) roll into today looking to take care of home court once again and climb back to .500 after snapping a ragged six-game losing streak against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. Waiting for them will be a young Phoenix Suns (2-9) team looking to build off of a tough but hard fought loss to the Boston Celtics.

No matter the record, the Suns have played the Pelicans tough on the road the past three seasons. From a game winner by Devin Booker to a breakout game from Josh Jackson, New Orleans lost to Phoenix a couple of times in the Smoothie King Center and barely escaped with wins in their last two matchups.

ESPN.com: Payton hopes to return as Pelicans host Suns

The New Orleans Pelicans hope to get starting point guard Elfrid Payton back from a sprained right ankle when they host his former team Saturday night.

The Pelicans are 1-5 without Payton, who left the Phoenix Suns to join them as a free agent during the summer.

New Orleans won its last game, edging visiting Chicago 07-98 on Wednesday night, but before that they went winless during a five-game road trip while Payton was sidelined.

Coach Alvin Gentry said after practice Friday that Payton would be a game-time decision.

Earlier in the week, New Orleans targeted Saturday as the date for Payton's potential return and he has continued to make progress.
