Less than 24 hours after Lance McCullers Jr. threw six scoreless innings against the Athletics, Cristian Javier did exactly the same on Sunday afternoon to help the Astros beat the Athletics 6-3 to complete the three-game sweep. Javier was offensively backed up by red-hot Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve.

Javier was in total control on Sunday. Over his six innings pitched, the A's only got a hit off him and drew three walks. The young right-hander also struck out six hitters and won for the first time since July 1, besides lowering his ERA to 2.

It seems that Trey Mancini is on a mission. The newly acquired first baseman had a night for the ages in his second start as an Astro, propelling the team to a 9-3 win against the Guardians to take the second game of the series. Mancini hit two home runs, including a Grand Slam, and drove in five of Houston's nine runs.

Mancini, who hit fifth for Houston and was the designated hitter, went 2-for-5 and had his two long balls in his first two at-bats of the game. The 30-year-old homered on Wednesday as well.

Trey Mancini homered in each of his first 2 starts with the Orioles.

The layoff, due to a right forearm strain suffered during the 2021 NLDS, took that long to rehab. The rest seems to have done him pretty good. Over a six-inning start, he surrendered no runs on two hits and four walks, striking out five Athletics and getting 47-of-81 offerings over the plate.

After McCullers got through the top of the first without any problems, Alex Bregman ensured that the pressure would be off the 28-year-old right-hander with a two-run homer, his 15th of the season. The homer, traveled 408 feet and was clocked off the bat at 105 MPH.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are playing in a series with the expected balance that ignores where each team is in their respective 2022 campaigns. It doesn't matter that the Yanks have a commanding lead in the AL East, and the Red Sox have a sub-.500 record in last place of the division.

This series heads into the rubber match at a dead-even split with each ballclub taking a 3-2 win over the first couple of games, and the Yankees will look to get out with a series win at Fenway en route to regaining their first-half form.

Rizzo's birthday cake

Anthony Rizzo missed a handful of games this past week with lower-back tightness, but also celebrated his 33rd birthday on August 8th. So, his teammates decided to mess with him a little bit by putting "we got your back" on his birthday cake.

New York Post | Jon Heyman: Apparently the chase for Luis Castillo ahead of August 2nd's trade deadline was a real one, although it seems the Reds were less interested in the Yankees' offer than you might expect. The club offered top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez as the headliner in a trade package, but balked at the inclusion of either Anthony Volpe or Oswald Peraza, and Cincy clearly prioritized the higher-ranked infielders.

Boston Globe | Peter Abraham: Andrew Benintendi made a second homecoming of sorts this weekend, returning to Fenway for the first time since being dealt to Kansas City over the winter.
