Talking Chop: Comeback bid falls short for Braves in 5-4 loss to Phillies

Dallas Keuchel has been lights-out for weeks and, through three innings on Tuesday evening, the former Cy Young winner looked to be in complete control. However, things went south for the left-hander and, with a five-run barrage as the catalyst, the Philadelphia Phillies upended the Atlanta Braves by a final score of 5-4 in the series opener.

It was the Braves that struck first on Tuesday evening, with Ozzie Albies putting on a show in contributing a triple in the first inning.

After Freddie Freeman earned a walk, Josh Donaldson brought Albies to the plate with a sacrifice fly and the Braves took a 1-0 lead.

Fansided: Atlanta Braves: Dallas Keuchel labors through rough start against the Phillies

The Atlanta Braves are on the cusp of clinching the National League East for the second year in a row. It could happen during the final homestand of the year and I'm almost certain that it will.

However, they'll have to get through the Phillies who are hoping something works in their favor to get them in the wild card picture.

It looked like Atlanta was going to walk away with Game 1 as they got off to a quick start in the first inning of the game against Vince Velasquez.

Not only was the offense clicking, but Dallas Keuchel was also dealing through the first 3 innings of the game.

Phillies Nation: Eflin, Phillies look to take season series from Braves

The Philadelphia Phillies (77-72) have the chance to take the season series with a win against the Atlanta Braves (93-59) on Wednesday. After taking game one on Tuesday night, the Phillies will play behind Zach Eflin, who is hoping for a better result against the Braves than he had last week. The same holds true for Braves right-hander Julio Teheran, who has had a solid overall season but struggled against the Phillies last Thursday.

Last Wednesady, Eflin only lasted 3.2 innings against the Braves while running his pitch count all the way up to 95. All of the damage he allowed came on a three-run home run by Josh Donaldson.

Phillies Nation: Phillies visit Braves to begin 11-game road trip

The Philadelphia Phillies (76-72) have 14 games left with the next 11 of them on the road. They begin their long road trip with a final trip to Atlanta against the NL East leading Braves (76-72). Up to this point in the 2019 campaign, the Phillies and Braves have split their season series 8-8 with Philadelphia winning two of the last three at Citizens Bank Park.

The two teams are on two different paths as the regular season inches to a close. Atlanta has the opportunity to eclipse the 100-win mark for the first time since 2003. Meanwhile, the Phillies are hanging onto very small hopes of making a run in their last chunk of games to make the postseason for the first time since 2011.

The Good Phight: The Jose Pirela Show: Phillies 5, Braves 4

When the lineups came out Tuesday, you knew what would happen.

You saw Jose Pirela's name in left field and thought, ok, this guy is gonna make an impact. He's a game changer. He's the one that will lead the final charge into the playoffs as the second wild card.

    No you didn't.

You probably groaned just like me and wondered where Adam Haseley was and questioned the team's sanity.

Well wouldn't you know? Jose Pirela impacted the game, hitting what would prove to be the game winning home run in the fourth inning to lead the Phillies on that charge, 5-4.
