This game does line up as a under but I've been burned by recency biased too many time. Darvis and Smyly have both been recently pitching really well so natrually you think they will continue. But I can not buy into Drew Smyly and I think he just had a hot streak that I expect to end. Meanwhile Darvish has looked fantastical his last five starts but he's working his pitch count up really high really fast and can't seem to go past 6 innings depending on the team. I love the cubs to win because I think Darvish is a lot better than Smyly and I give the edge to the bats of the phillies. But I think some runs are scored in this one and i'll go over in hopes that Smyly gives up 8 himself because he's more than capable of that.

    My Pick: Chicago -147 & Over 9.5

  • This game is all set up for an under play - both offenses will be facing pitching theyve struggled against: Chicago has a .238 team batting average against lefties, like Smyly, while Philadelphia is hitting just .240 against right-handed pitchers, like Darvish. Plus, 9.5 seems like a lot considering the fact that both pitchers have the stuff to pitch a gem on any given night. Im not saying its going to be an outright pitchers duel or anything but I can see the Phillies winning 5-2 or something similar.

    My Pick: Under 9.5

Smyly hasnt made too many people smile since joining the Phillies staff. Drew Smyly has gone 2-6 with a 6.96 ERA in 17 games on the year, including 1-1 record with a 3.80 ERA in four starts as a member of the Phillies and 1-4 with a 7.40 ERA in 10 games in his home games overall. The Phillies have been a below average offensive team so far as they come in ranked 17th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.77 rpg, while also ranking 22nd in hitting at .246 and 23rd in homers with 153. With all that said I think the Cubs can turn things around as they have all year and get a win here

    My Pick: Chicago -142

Philly has put a drubbing on the Cubs and with Darvish on the mound today who has become completely unreliable I expect for Philly to take another here. And just like that the Cubs give up the lead in the division.

The Good Phight: bRyCE Isn'T CLutCh THo: Phillies 7, Cubs 5

    MLB

After the eighth inning, I assumed this recap was going to be based around Charlie Manuel and how he might not be a magical elixir to cure the Phillies' offensive woes. Thanks to Bryce Harper and company, I've had to make a bit of a pivot. Now, I'm just left wondering why Manuel didn't start coaching the team before the ninth inning.

For eight innings, the story of the game was Yu Darvish. The Cubs' starter hasn't lived up to expectations since signing as a free agent last season, but he was excellent on Thursday.

Phillies Nation: Phillies go for sweep against Darvish and the Cubs

    MLB

As the Phillies coaching staff and bench players returned to the dugout following the national anthem on Wednesday night, a roar was heard from the first base side of Citizens Bank Park. Fans seated behind the Phillies dugout were loudly acknowledging new Phillies hitting coach and legendary manager Charlie Manuel as he turned his back towards them to take a seat on the bench and watch his team go to work just like he used to. Those same fans, along with the other 27,204 in attendance, would salute Manuel again with "CHAR-LIE" chants after J.T. Realmuto deposited a ball into the left field seats for his second grand slam in less than a month, giving the Phillies a 10-0 lead.

Bleed Cubbie Blue: Phillies 4, Cubs 2: The road woes continue

    MLB

The late-inning comeback Sunday in Cincinnati, leading to a hard-earned series split, gave me the thought that the Cubs might have solved their road-game issues and they might put together a good performance behind Jose Quintana and win Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

    Good performance by Q? Check.

The rest of this game? Not so much, and the Cubs wound up with an immensely frustrating 4-2 defeat.

Quintana started out with a 28-pitch first inning -- including 11 pitches to new Phillies leadoff hitter Bryce Harper -- but eventually struck out the side.

The Good Phight: Game Thread 8/13: Cubs at Phillies

    MLB

As you've already heard, the Phillies underwent some changes today. You can feel the new offense coursing with hits already as the Phillies begin a series with the Cubs, with technically some remaining playoff contention on the line. But does it really feel like that?

CBS Philly: Realmuto, Harper Lead Phillies Over Hamels, Cubs 11-1

    MLB

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper went deep twice and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 in Charlie Manuel's first game as hitting coach, ruining Cole Hamels' return home Wednesday night. Manuel was back in red pinstripes in his old dugout exactly six years to the day the franchise icon managed his last game for the Phillies.

He heard "Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!" chants after Realmuto connected to make it 10-0 in the third.

Hamels, the 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP with Manuel's Phillies, was roughed up in his first game in Philadelphia since he was traded to Texas in July 2015.

Phillies Nation: Harper, Phillies chase Hamels, blow out Cubs

    MLB

On a nostalgic night for fans that featured the return of two World Series heroes in Charlie Manuel and Cole Hamels, the Philadelphia Phillies put together one of their most complete games of the season.

Ace Aaron Nola threw seven innings of one-run ball for the Phillies, Bryce Harper blasted two home runs and the Phillies blew away the Chicago Cubs, 11-1.

Nola looked good early, retiring the Cubs in the side in the first inning and striking out two on 13 pitches. In the bottom of the frame, Rhys Hoskins broke an 0-13 stretch with a leadoff single.
