The Seattle Times: Defensive lapse in ninth proves costly as Mariners drop another to Angels

    MLB

The strategy worked and yet the Mariners still weren't rewarded.

Seattle went back to its often criticized strategy of using an opener, and while that worked as planned, the Angels won anyway, 6-2 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Park.

And it all came down to the inability to get under an easy infield pop-up.

Mariners reliever Roenis Elias was apparently out of the ninth inning of a 2-2 game when he got Luis Refigno to hit a towering pop-up. Elias indicated he had it, but he didn't, the ball landing a couple of feet to his side.

Halos Heaven: Angels and Mariners have a sucking contest, Angels blink first

    MLB

For the first eight innings, only Ty Buttrey was immune. To the stir of lifelessness that was present at Safeco Field (who cares if they don't call it that anymore), the baseball players going through the motions. The offenses, waving around their bats as if they were heavy sticks instead of tools used to do damage. Buttrey punched out three hitters on eleven pitches. It's amazing what he can do on rest.

The Mariners first scratched out two runs off Griffin Canning. There were the usual suspects. Dee Gordon sacrifice fly. Omar Narvaez RBI single.
