Wainwright had a vintage performance Sunday against the D-backs, throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just four hits on 97 pitches. He struck out seven and walked just one, earning his sixth win of the year. Mahle is going for Cinci toight and his his last start he took a loss as he allowed a season-high-tying six earned runs against the Rockies in 4 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander has been held out of the win column since May 31 vs. Washington. All things considered I like Wainwright and the slightly better Cardinals here at even money.

  • Love the Cardinals here on the road. The Cards are 23-11 in their last 34 games vs. the Reds and I think that trend will keep continuing here. Wainwright has taken advantage of sub par teams going 47-16 in Wainwrights last 63 starts vs. sub-.500 teams. He is also 41-14 in Wainwrights last 55 starts during game 2 of a series. so there is a lot to like there. What isnt working right now is Tyler Mahle against anyone, anywhere. Mahle is coming off an outing where he didnt last 5 innings and gave up 10 runs on 12 hits. He is also in the midst of a long winless streak which is never a good sign. Mahle this season has also set a new single-season career high in losses after dropping to 0-5 with a 5.80 ERA in seven starts during his winless stretch. The right-hander had a subpar outing in St. Louis in his only prior matchup with the Cardinals this year, giving up five runs in five innings in a 6-3 defeat April 27. The Cards are starting to heat up and make their playoff push while the Reds are looking more and more like sellers at the deadline.

(63% consensus). Only 2 1/2 games separated the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central coming out of the All-Star break, but things could not have unfolded much differently for the two division rivals since. The Cardinals hope to continue their second-half surge on Friday when they visit the Reds for the second of four games in Cincinnati... http://bit.ly/2E6Lezs

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Edman's sixth-inning slam caps Cardinals rally against Reds

    MLB

CINCINNATI - In his first two-bats of the game, both against Reds starter Tanner Roark, Cardinals rookie Tommy Edman had already been fed his recommended daily allowance of curveballs. Roark struck him out twice with a curve, and the only thing that travels faster than a spent sunflower seed through a dugout is a scouting report.

No compatible source was found for this media.

"I was pretty confident that Stephenson was going to try and spin me, spin me into the ground," Edman said. "Watching the at-bats before (mine) he was throwing tons of sliders.

Red Reporter: Tommy Edman grand slam, blown 3-run lead send Reds to 7-4 loss to Cardinals

    MLB

    No.

Key Plays Eugenio Suarez went boom in the Bottom of the 1st, belting a 3-1 Dakota Hudson meatball into the seats in LF for a solo shot, giving the Cincinnati Reds an early 1-0 lead.
Tanner Roark helped himself with a leadoff double in the Bottom of the 3rd, and he scooted to 3B when Jesse Winker followed with a single. Joe Dan Votto then plated Roark with an RBI single that moved Winker up to 3B, and a deep sac fly to the wall in CF by Suarez brought Winker in to make it 3-0.
