  • Looking at this matchup and skill set really makes me think book makers got this one wrong for the pitching props. Right now Jack Flaherty has a strike out prop of 5.5 even money or +110 on the under depending on your book. Flaherty has extreme strike out splits and strikes out lefties 19% of the time compared to 32% for righties. This is important because he is facing five lefties and they are all low strike out batters. Flaherty hasn't faced the pirates this year but he faced them six times last year and only struck out more than 5.5 once. I just don't like this line and htink he finishes under more than half the time and we are getting plus money or even money, I'll take the under here

Dario Agrazal has not looked great since being called up and today is a horrible day to be a reverse splits pitcher. He's giving up a .408 wOBA to righties today and the cards are notoriously a right handed heavy lineup. As of now they are projected to have three switch hitters in the LU and i"m curious to how they will bat. Jack is one of my favorite up can coming pitchers and while I don't think he will rack up the strike outs, he should have a pretty good game. He struggles with lefties as well and he has a larger sample size than Agrazal so his numbers should be considered more "true". After looking at the number, I don't love the cards and I hate this price so if I had to bet on this game I'd actaully take the Pirates. I like the under in this game as well because neither of these teams are really that inspiring so that will be my play, under and pirates for value because 170 is just way to much giving the numbers

    My Pick: Pittsburgh +170 & Under 9

(64% consensus). After a less-than-stellar showing by the rotation during the first half of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals' starting pitchers have been downright stingy coming out of the All-Star break. The Cardinals turn to Jack Flaherty on Tuesday with the hope he becomes the latest hurler to stymie an opponent when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second contest of their three-game series... http://bit.ly/2GfvHU5

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Cardinals offense leaves Flaherty in a bind in 3-1 loss to Pirates

    MLB

Martinez retired Bryan Reynolds to start the ninth and then hit Starling Marte with a pitch. Josh Bell followed with a single up the middle to send Marte to third. Colin Moran followed with a sharp grounder to Kolten Wong at second, who dived to his left to stop it, but he bobbled it, wiping out the chance for a double play and eventually missing the chance to get Moran at first. Marte scored to put the Pirates ahead. A walk to Corey Dickerson loaded the bases, and then Kevin Newman hit a grounder to Paul DeJong at short, who got the force at second but Wong's relay to first short-hopped Paul Goldschmidt and he couldn't make the play.

Fansided: Pittsburgh Pirates Get Much Needed Win In St. Louis

Entering Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates were in dire need of a victory. After dropping the first four games out of the gate following the All-Star Break, the team found themselves at 44-49 overall and 5.5 games out in the National League Central. To their credit, the team picked up said victory.

Following a 3-1 victory that was highlighted by strong starting pitching, the Pirates are now 45-49 on the season. This includes being 4-4 against those evil, nasty, no good, cheating, dirty, rotten St. Louis Cardinals.

It did not take either starting pitcher to get into a groove on Tuesday night.

Fansided: Bad Defense Sinks Pittsburgh Pirates In Loss Against The Cardinals

Coming out of the All-Star Break the Pittsburgh Pirates appeared to be in a good spot. The team won 14 of their final 21 games before the break, and were just 2.5 games out of the top spot in the NL Central and the second NL Wild Card spot. Well, the team's hot streak has certainly come to an end.

Over the weekend, the Pirates were swept by the Chicago Cubs in ugly fashion. This dropped the team to 44-48 overall on the season, 5.5 games out of first place in the NL Central.
