  • @Padres • 1m Machado, Green ejected; Padres lose to Rockies

    DENVER --

The Padres began Saturday the way they finished Friday.

Then Eric Lauer picked up where had left off in his last game at Coors Field.

And then the night got even crazier.

The Padres fell behind big, got back in the game and then lost 14-8.

The Rockies drove Lauer from the game in the third inning, and after scoring five runs against him added six more against Robbie Erlin and three more against Gerardo Reyes.

Ian Desmond's grand slam gave the Rockies an 11-4 lead in the fifth inning, affording the Padres two extra innings to work back from nearly an identical deficit they faced seven innings into Friday's 16-12 victory.

Fansided: Watch: Hunter Renfroe's three home runs as Padres outslug Rockies

The San Diego Padres were in desperate need of a win Friday, so they pulled out all the stops for their latest come from behind rally against the Colorado Rockies--including a huge night for one Hunter Renfroe.

San Diego found themselves down by six runs entering the top of the ninth at Coors Field, but the Padres were able to tie the game at 11-11 and two innings later, won it 16-12.

The MVP of the evening was clearly Hunter Renfroe, who had the third three-homer evening of his career. He went 4-for-7 with four runs scored and five RBI, with an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .

Purple Row: San Diego Padres 16, Colorado Rockies 12: Wow

Going into the ninth inning of Friday night's game, the Rockies led the Padres 11-5. They lost the game 16-12. I'm no brain surgeon, but that seems really, really bad. Mike Dunn entered the game for the Rockies and promptly allowed three singles and a three-run home run to Hunter Renfroe, forcing Wade Davis into the game, where he promptly blew the save. Since the start of 2018, Mike Dunn has an 8.05 ERA in 34 2/3 innings. The Rockies have payed him $14 million dollars over that stretch.

Denver Post: Rockies blow six-run lead in ninth inning in historic meltdown, lose in extra innings to Padres

What should have been one of the best, most-entertaining nights of the Rockies' season became its worst -- by far -- thanks to a historic meltdown by their bullpen.

San Diego scored 12 unanswered runs, including five in the 12th inning off reliever Jairo Diaz, to win 16-12. The Padres strung together five hits off Diaz, including a two-run homer by Hunter Renfroe, his third home run of the night.

The Padres trailed 11-5 going into the ninth, but tied the game as the crowd let loose with boos. San Diego blasted left-hander Mike Dunn with four runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning.

  • @Padres • 1m Padres score six in ninth, five more in 12th to beat Rockies

    DENVER --

For the first time in nine years, the Padres have arrived in mid-June as a question mark.

    Buyer or seller?

Padres players aren't quite ready to give in to their bosses choosing the latter.

"Gotta win," Eric Hosmer said Friday afternoon.

About five hours later, he contributed to an historic six-run ninth inning that staved off a seemingly certain loss and allowed the Padres to eventually beat the Rockies 16-12 in 12 innings Friday night at Coors Field.

The deciding inning was started by Fernando Tatis Jr.'s triple off the center field wall.
