  • Pantagraph: College Report 5/25/19: ISU's Smith qualifies for NCAA in high jump

    Illinois State sophomore Kameesha Smith qualified for the NCAA Championships with her performance late Thursday night in the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Sacramento, Calif.

    Smith cleared 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the high jump to finish in a three-way tie for 10th place. She qualified for the NCAA Championships on June 5-8 at Austin, Texas.

    Franklin nets 10th at NCAAs: Illinois Wesleyan's Jessica Franklin was the highest-finishing freshman in the heptathlon with a 10th place in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Geneva, Ohio.

    Franklin finished with 4,587 points.

    The Bradley track teams concluded the 2019 outdoor season in the NCAA Track & Field Quarterfinals, running in the 800m and 3,000m steeplechase on Friday night in the NCAA West Preliminary.

    Sophomore Alec Hartman opened the competition for the Braves in the 800m. One day after advancing to the quarterfinals and setting a school record in the event, Hartman just missed making it to the semifinals as the sophomore placed 14th on Friday with 12 runners advancing. Hartman crossed the finish line in 1:49.19 and was just nine hundredths of a second off his school-record pace from the night before.

    Sydney Laufenberg continued Illinois State's successful showing at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round Friday, punching her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in. She is the second Redbird to advance and joins teammate Kameesha Smith who qualified yesterday in high jump.

    Laufenberg threw for a mark of 55.28m (181-04) to finish 11th in her third appearance at the NCAA West Prelims. The redshirt-sophomore is a two-time MVC champion in discus and currently holds the school record of 56.99m (187-00), having set it at the Ole Miss Classic on March 30.

    NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State dropped two straight games on Friday in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and was eliminated from title contention. Illinois State fell to Dallas Baptist 9-7 in game one, and then had a quick turnaround and fell to Indiana State, 10-6. The Redbirds finish the regular season with a 34-24 overall record.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Redbird Football Adds 2021 Tilt At Western Michigan

    NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State football program has added another FBS contest to its future slate of games, as the Redbirds have announced a 2021 matchup at Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan.

    The game is scheduled to take place on Sept. 11, 2021, at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The contest will be the ninth against the Broncos, who lead the all-time series against ISU 7-1. The Redbirds' only win in the series was a 20-6 victory at Hancock Stadium in 1987 and the two teams haven't met since 2001.

    ISU has not faced a MAC opponent since a 2013 contest at Ball State, but won a 2012 matchup at Eastern Washington.

    On the very first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round, sophomore Kameesha Smith punched her ticket to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump. The Redbirds have now sent student-athletes to the NCAA Championships in back-to-back years.

    Smith cleared 1.75m (5-08.75) to finish in a three-way tie for 10th place and qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8. The South Holland, Illinois native is coming off a first-place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships in which she topped 1.76m (5-09.

    NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State defeated Indiana State by a final score of 10-7 on Thursday evening at Duffy Bass Field during the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Sycamores scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead, however the Redbirds responded with five runs in the home half to take the lead, and eventually won the game. ISU will take on Dallas Baptist tomorrow at 3 p.m. in a battle of 2-0 teams at the tournament.

  • Official Site of the Braves: Bradley Softball Announces 2019 Award Winners

    PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior outfielder Gabby Stoner and junior first baseman Allison Apke were named Bradley Softball's 2019 co-Most Valuable Players announced by 11th-year head coach Amy Hayes Thursday.

    Apke also garnered the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player honor for the second consecutive year, while Stoner earned Bradley's Softball's 4D award in recognition of her desire, dedication, determination and discipline. In addition, senior catcher Katie Habryle received the team's Defensive MVP honor, with sophomore utility Taise Thompson garnering the Most Improved Player award.

  • Pantagraph: Redbirds reap rewards after sharing MVC baseball title

    With the Illinois State baseball team, all that really matters is the convergence of wisdom and talent ushered the Redbirds to a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship.

    ISU was rewarded for that achievement Tuesday when the MVC selected Redbird coach Steve Holm its Coach of the Year, Joe Aeilts its Player of the Year and Brent Headrick its Pitcher of the Year on the opening day of the Valley Tournament at Duffy Bass Field.

    In his first season as a head coach, Holm guided the Redbirds to their first 30-win campaign since 2014 at 32-22, already a 10-win improvement over ISU's 22-30 record in 2018.

    Five members of the Bradley track team start their quest for an NCAA Championship this week by competing at the NCAA Track & Field West Preliminary. The Braves are set for action on the campus of Sacramento State on Thursday and Friday night.

    The Missouri Valley Conference has named 27 Illinois State student-athletes to the 2019 MVC Track & Field Scholar-Athlete team for their combined performances in sport and in the classroom on Wednesday.

    Student-athletes recognized on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, and have placed in the top eight of an individual event or top three in a relay event at the Indoor or Outdoor Championships.

    NORMAL, IL - Southern Illinois first baseman J.T. Weber was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and the Salukis pushed across seven runs against Bradley's top three pitchers, using a 7-4 victory to advance to the six-team, double-elimination portion of the bracket in the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship Tuesday night at Illinois State's Duffy Bass Field.

    The fifth-seeded Braves (31-19) season comes to an end, while the Salukis will face tournament host Illinois State in Wednesday's 3 p.m. game.

    Senior RHP Mitch Janssen entered Tuesday's start ranked 18th nationally with a 1.94 season earned run average, but allowed four runs, two earned, on two hits and five walks in his 4.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Redbirds Bring Home a Plethora of MVC Post-Season Awards

    ST LOUIS - Illinois State won three-of-six post-season specialty awards, as well as placed five on the All-MVC teams announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The Redbirds won the Joe Carter Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Dan Callahan Coach of the Year, as well as brought home four All-MVC First Team Honors, and one All-MVC Honorable Mention award.

    The Redbirds right fielder Joe Aeilts was named MVC Joe Carter Player of the Year. Left-handed starting pitcher, Brent Headrick was named Pitcher of the Year. Meanwhile, first year head coach, Steve Holm brought home MVC Coach of the Year.
