    NORMAL, Ill. - After a long summer of work in the weight room and conditioning on the field, the Illinois State football team gathered together Friday morning at Hancock Stadium for its first workout of the fall in preparation for the season opener at NIU on August 31.

    Practice Highlights:

    The team could not have been met with better weather for the first day of fall training camp, as the offensive and defensive units took the field in helmets only during the NCAA mandated acclimation period.
    Practice began with a quick install period for the offense and defense on opposite ends of the field, before a team stretch led to a special teams circuit.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Illinois State Athletics To Offer Beer & Wine Sales At Select Events

    NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State Athletics Department announced today that it will offer beer and wine sales at public concession stands in general seating areas at Hancock Stadium and Redbird Arena beginning in the fall of 2019. Plans to allow beer sales at Adelaide Street Field, Marian Kneer Stadium and Duffy Bass Field are also being finalized.

    A wider selection of beer, wine and mixed drinks will continue to be sold only in premium club/suite areas of the stadium and arena. The expansion of beer and wine sales was vetted and supported by the ISU administration, as well as other key internal campus and student government stakeholders.

    NORMAL -- Illinois State football coach Brock Spack aggressively recruited Mitchell Lewis out of Naperville North High School. Spack even attended one of Lewis' basketball games to show his interest.

    Spack lost that battle when Lewis chose Miami of Ohio, but the setback was temporary. Lewis has left Miami and signed a scholarship agreement to transfer to ISU.

    "We tried hard to get him (out of high school)," Spack said Tuesday. "Like several other really good transfers, we were able to get him on the rebound. We will get him up to speed with the passing game and blocking assignments as quick as we can.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Redbirds in the Pros: Recently Drafted Redbirds Thriving

    A trio of recently drafted Redbirds made their professional debuts in the past weeks and continue to make Illinois State proud.

    Outfielder John Rave, who heard his name called in the fifth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals, burst onto the scene with Rookie Advanced Affiliate Burlington Royals when he went 4-for-5 at the plate in his first game on June 18. Rave also added a RBI and three runs scored.

    Joe Aeilts is also off to a strong start, batting .355/.459/.355 in 31 at-bats with the Class A Short Season Boise Hawks (Colorado Rockies).

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Rachel Hickey Punches Ticket to Pan American U20 Championships with Team USA

    Redbird student-athlete Rachel Hickey posted an impressive performance at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships Sunday evening in Miramar, Florida, clocking in at 4:30.93 in the 1,500-meter race to finish second. With that time, the Peru, Illinois native has secured her spot on Team USATF and will compete at the Pan American U20 Championships in Costa Rica, July 18-21.

  • Pantagraph: College Report 6/22/19: ISU's Hickey set for U20 Championships

    Illinois State sophomore track and field standout Rachel Hickey will compete in the U20 Outdoor Championships this weekend at Miramar, Fla.

    The top under-20 athletes from across the country will vie for spots on Team USATF at the Pan American U20 Championships in Costa Rica later this summer.

    Hickey will compete in the 1,500-meter run Sunday at 4:49 p.m. CT. It will be her first 1,500 of her career after mostly running the 800 and mile during the indoor season. She ran a personal-best of 4:52.37 in the mile at the Meyo Invitational in early February.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Illinois State Baseball Sets Dates for High School Prospect Camps

    The Illinois State coaching staff has set the dates for two one-day high school prospect camps, as announced by Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year Steve Holm on Wednesday morning. The camps will be held at Duffy Bass Field, home of the 2019 MVC regular season champions and NCAA regional finalists, on Tuesday, July 2 and Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be split into a position player and pitcher portion.

    Registration for position players will take place from 9-9:30 a.m., with the camp running until noon.

  • Official Site of the Braves: Rea's Header Leads FC Diablos

    Redshirt junior forward T.J. Rea continues to return to form after missing the 2018 season with a hamstring injury. He scored a go-ahead goal in Thursday's eventual 2-2 draw for FC Diablos against Springfield FC at the Corn Crib in Normal.

    FC Diablos, which also features Bradley players Roman Schindler and Jordan Walpole, will return to action Saturday by visiting Old Bhoys FC and Bradley teammate John Pollifrone.

    Junior forward Gerit Wintermeyer continued to contribute to the Chicago FC United attack, dishing out a 10th-minute assist for what proved to be the game-winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 win against Dayton Dutch Lions in USL Two action in Dayton.

    RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Former Bradley pitcher Elliot Ashbeck made a statement before making a return trip to the Class A Advanced California League All-Star Game. In his third start of the season, the right-handed veteran reliever fanned 15 Rancho Cucamonga hitters Sunday, leading his Lake Elsinore Storm to an 11-5 victory at LoanMart Field. The 15 strikeouts are the most by any pitcher in all of Minor League Baseball so far in 2019.

    Named to the South Division pitching staff for Tuesday's California League All-Star Game for the second year in a row, Ashbeck has started just six games in his 97 career professional pitching appearances since being drafted in 2015.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Aeilts Receives All-Region Honors from ABCA/Rawlings

    Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Joe Aeilts has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division I Midwest All-Region Second Team, as announced Wednesday afternoon. The teams are voted on by members of the ABCA and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA DI All-America Committee.

    The junior is one of four Redbirds that started every game this season, playing both right field and third base. In conference play this season, Aeilts slashed .349/.404/.570 with seven doubles, four homeruns, 19 RBIs, and 18 runs scored. The Champaign, Illinois, native placed in the top-five throughout the conference in hits (30), RBIs, doubles, and total bases (49), and ended his junior season with a league leading 88 hits and 49 RBI.

    AUSTIN, Texas - It was a long wait for Illinois State field standouts Kameesha Smith and Sydney Laufenberg, who had to wait until the final day of completion at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday to finally perform in Austin, Texas.

    The wait was well worth it, as both took home second-team All-America honors with top 16 finishes in their respective events at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

    Smith started the high jump competition strong clearing the first two bars (1.70m and 1.75m) in just three attempts. As she headed to the third bar at 1.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Anstey Earns All-America Honors At NCAA Championships

    AUSTIN, Texas - Competing against some of the best runners in the country, Illinois State junior Jack Anstey finished strong in the men's 1,500-meter race to earn First-Team All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas.

    The Newtown Toowoomba, Australia, native finished fifth in his flight on Wednesday to earn his spot in the 12-runner final on Friday night. Anstey stayed in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race, but a strong kick at the end helped him cross the finish line in a time of 3:42.

  • Pantagraph: College Report 6/7/19: Wegman earns MVC postgraduate honor

    Illinois State track standout Derek Wegman, a Tri-Valley High School graduate, was among four Missouri Valley Conference student-athletes to receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the conference, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Thursday.

    Wegman competed in track the past four seasons. He earned All-MVC status at the 2019 indoor championships byr finishing third in the long jump. He also was sixth in the heptathlon at the 2018 MVC Indoor Championship.

    Wegman maintained a 3.86 GPA while studying Recreation Management and plans to pursue a master's degree in Sport Management at ISU beginning this fall.

    Robinson, Himmelman honored: Illinois State running back James Robinson and offensive lineman Drew Himmelman named preseason All-Americans by HERO Sports FCS.

  • Official Site of the Redbirds: Wegman Earns 2019 MVC Postgraduate Scholarship

    ST. LOUIS - Illinois State Track and Field standout Derek Wegman was one of four Missouri Valley Conference student-athletes to receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the conference, announced by Commissioner Doug Elgin on Thursday. Honorees were selected by the MVC Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee, based on their exemplary athletic and academic performances.

    Wegman has been a member of Illinois State's men's track and field team the past four seasons, helping the 'Birds to back-to-back indoor track and field championships in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He earned All-MVC status at the 2019 indoor track and field championships after finishing third in the long jump.
