  • azcentral.com: ASU baseball loses Stanford series on ninth inning homer but optimistic about postseason

If Arizona State baseball had finished off No. 4 Stanford on Saturday, the rest of the weekend would have felt much better than it will after falling one out short in a 3-2 loss.

In the bigger picture, though, a win or loss in the regular season finale makes no difference for the Sun Devils, who are going back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years.

ASU (37-17, 16-13 Pac-12) likely will be a No. 2 regional seed when NCAA pairings are announced Monday. That's where things have stood for a few weeks as the Sun Devils dropped from a 25-1 start to 12-16 since April 1.

  • azcentral.com: Pac-12 eliminates transfer penalty, strengthens non-conference basketball scheduling

The transfer portal has made it a lot easier for athletes to move from one school to another. Now comes another move -- this one by the Pac-12 -- that will help athletes that want to change schools within the conference.

At the Pac-12's annual spring meeting held Monday at its headquarters in San Francisco the CEO Group approved several measures, including one that eliminates the "loss of a season" penalty for athletes who want to transfer from one Pac-12 school to another. Such athletes would still have to sit out a year, but it would not count against their eligibility.

  • azcentral.com: Guard Luguentz Dort not expected to return to ASU

    (Photo: Kim Raff, AP)

Any chance Sun Devil faithful might have had that guard Luguentz Dort would return to school looks to be gone.

Dort told Jeff Goodman of @Stadium that he is not returning to school and plans to proceed with his plans to go in the NBA draft.

Early this season Dort was projected as a possible lottery selection but latest projections have him going anywhere from the late-first round to the mid-second round. A rule that went into effect this season allows a player to declare for the draft, hire an NBA-certified agent and go through an evaluation process, but withdraw from the draft and return to school.

  • azcentral.com: ASU's Kyle Williams balancing athletics and pursuing a career in medicine

Often an injury can be a career setback. For Arizona State wide receiver Kyle Williams it was a career catalyst.

Williams now views a separated shoulder that slowed him his freshman season as a blessing in disguise. Growing up he had always enjoyed math and science but never knew where those interests would lead him -- that is until the injury paved the way for his first meeting with Dr. Anikar Chhabra, the Sun Devils team physician and the director of sports medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Tempe.

The doctor, a former basketball player at Harvard, helped Williams overcome the shoulder ailment and became a mentor in the process.
